When my husband died suddenly, followed by our aging dog, and then our old cat disappeared, I figured my pet-owning days were over. I was pushing eighty-five and woke up every morning saying, "Okay, Lord, what's going to hurt today?" I had reached the point of wondering if there was even any point to getting up.

Then my veterinarian's wife tipped me off that a litter of kittens was on its way to the animal shelter. My brain was obviously not in gear. Before the day was over, a three-month-old kitty had moved into my home and heart. I've rescued cats my entire life, but no kittens in the past twenty-five years. What was I thinking? (Keep reading)
