Focus on refillable beauty

Albéa showcased their latest innovation at LuxePack in Monaco. Refillable beauty was one of the key topics at this year’s appearance. The team will be showcasing some novelties tailored for skincare, body care, and hair care products.
One of the newcomers in Monaco is Polaris, a mono-material PP and refillable jar with a fully new concept for maximum ease of use: the cap is attached to the base with an invisible hinge thus solving any cap issue and providing full access to the formula. Polaris is refillable with the TWIRL system.

Quinoa for cosmetics

Clariant is excited to announce the global launch of Pickmulse, a new O/W surfactant-free emulsifier and encapsulation system based on Lucas Meyer Cosmetics’ breakthrough patented quinoa starch technology. Due to the small size of quinoa starch particles, this product allows easy formulation of Pickering emulsions with an outstanding sensory skin feel. This improved tactile experience has been proven by scientific studies to stimulate wellbeing and reward areas in the brain, aligning with emerging market trends in neurocosmetics. These experiments included functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements, and the perceived benefits were additionally confirmed through panelist questionnaires.

Price trends vary

Flexible Packaging Europe released the report for Q3. Prices for flexible packaging materials in Europe showed a mixed development in the third quarter of 2024, influenced by fluctuations in the availability of raw materials, logistics and international markets. The latest price index data (based on Q4/2020 = 100%) illustrates the dynamic changes in the individual substrates.
In the third quarter of 2024, the price of 60 g/m² one-side coated paper rose further to 150% compared to the base price, which corresponds to a significant increase compared to the previous quarters (Q1: 130%, Q2: 140%). Prices for aluminium foil (7 micron) showed a stable development at a high level (161% in Q3), following a high of 164% in Q2. In contrast, prices for 12-micron PET film continued to rise, reaching 148% in Q3.

The commercial relevance of active ingredients addressing the functional attributes of anti-aging and moisturizing is gaining popularity for haircare applications. These trends are further propelled by the introduction of high-efficacy biotech ingredients as well as offering some localized/customized innovations based on biomaterials or microbiome technology for shampoos, conditioners, and other hair treatment products. The prominent haircare brands have been actively collaborating with biotech start-ups as well as established ingredient companies to commercially adopt these technologies.
