| International Tests Show U.S. Students Still Trail Behind Many Asian Peers in Science and Math Performance | U.S. students still trail behind their peers in a number of Asian countries when it comes to math and science performance, according to results released last week from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Eighth-grade students in the United States showed some improvement in math and science over the past four years, but science scores for U.S. fourth graders were flat. NSTA Executive Director David Evans told The Washington Post that he is now hopeful that new science standards that have been adopted by a growing number of states -- and that push students to solve problems and learn about science by doing science -- will make a difference, prompting bigger gains in the coming years. Learn more about the TIMSS here, and read some of the news coverage here, here, and here. | |
