Number of Latino farmers small, but growing

According to the agricultural census, Minnesota is home to about 112,000 farmers. Of those, 650 identify as Hispanic or Latino. That number is growing.

Our Report for America fellow Vicki Adame spoke with three different Latino families on their journey of farming and what it means to work in an industry that does not typically look like you.

What else we're watching:
Minneapolis police fatally shoot man after overnight standoff. 26-year-old Abdi Abdi was one of several people outside the police perimeter looking in on Thursday morning. He said he was a high school classmate and friend of the man who died, and he said he had been concerned about his friend after recent conversations.

Suspect in the Buffalo mass shooting has been indicted on federal hate crime charges. Payton Gendron, now 19, is facing 27 counts — including 10 hate crimes resulting in death and three counts of hate crimes involving an attempt to kill, along with 13 counts of using, carrying or discharging a firearm — following the deadly racist attack at the Tops supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood.

U.S. regulators clear way for more monkeypox vaccine shipments. The update from the Food and Drug Administration comes amid growing frustration about limited access to the two-dose vaccine as thousands of people in New York City, California and other parts of the U.S. await a chance to get the shot.
