On this day in 1990, The Canberra Times was reporting on calls for the ACT to have its own jail. NSW Labor senator Bruce Childs said the ACT should stop "banishing" it's prisoners to the overcrowded and inhumane NSW jail system. ACT Attorney-General Bernard Collaery would not rule out a joint ACT-NSW facility - however he said the ACT did not require a maximum-security facility. READ MORE
