Survey: Nurses play a larger role in patient care management

Eighty percent of registered nurses believe “healthcare professionals besides physicians” have increased their role in patient care management, according to a survey conducted by University of Phoenix. It also found that one-third of RNs have seen an increased role in doing tasks traditionally done by physicians. The survey contains the opinions of 500 registered nurses and administrative staff.

While it’s important to deal with the negative impact that adverse events in healthcare settings have on patients and their families, the emotional toll of these events on healthcare professionals has gone unaddressed for too long. Due to the nature of their work, these professionals can be repeatedly exposed to emotional turmoil to the point that they are considered “second victims” of these adverse events.
