Today is Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the low 80s to mid-80s with sunny skies throughout the state and a chance for rain in the north. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

3 Maine nursing homes getting new COVID-19 test machines, but the tests have limits

  • The machines use technology called antigen testing, which is 80 to 90 percent accurate but has advantages including faster processing. A group that represents nursing home medical directors is concerned that the relative inaccuracy of the tests could lead to missed cases in nursing homes, which have been susceptible to deadly outbreaks of the coronavirus throughout the pandemic.
  • The coronavirus is changing how Maine is preparing for winter storms. Major concerns include potential evacuations to congregate settings, whether they be cooling stations used for a few hours during the summer or overnight shelters used in wind or ice storms.
Bangor High asks parents to choose a back-to-school plan for their kids

  • The high school sent a survey to parents asking them to confirm whether they want their children to attend school in person full-time, a few days a week, or not at all. It follows the state's release of a green light for schools across the state to return to in-person instruction.
Houlton 10-year-old achieves golf notoriety with hole-in-one
  • Jacob Bushey was playing in a youth league at Houlton Community Golf Course on Monday when he carded the ace. It came on the 131-yard eighth hole.
Maine lobster industry to lose sustainability certification over its effect on right whales

  • The decision comes after a federal judge ruled in April that the National Marine Fisheries Service had understated the threat of entanglement in lobster fishing gear to the population of right whales in the North Atlantic Ocean, which is estimated to be around 400 animals. The ruling effectively lowered the fishery’s sustainability score, and led to the decision to suspend its certification.

Regulator fines CMP $500K for improper winter disconnect notices
  • Maine’s utilities regulator agreed to fine Central Maine Power Co. $500,000, the top amount allowable, for issuing winter disconnection notices to customers without its prior approval.

Bangor man who owns breweries and restaurants around state plans Dover-Foxcroft operation

  • Blaze Brewing Co., with breweries in Biddeford and Camden, is expanding into Piscataquis County, but the Dover-Foxcroft location is expected to be much more than a brewery when it opens. Bangor native Matt Haskell, the owner of Blaze Brewing and the Blaze Restaurant Group, envisions the site to include not only a mixed-fermentation brewery, but also a distillery, eatery, wedding and events venue and sustainable farming site where he will raise Wagyu and Angus cattle.
Maine player's UMaine baseball hitting streak record still stands after 30 years
  • Brian Seguin of Lewiston struggled during his first season with the Black Bears, but put together a string of 27 consecutive games with a hit in 1990. He went on to set three more school records the following year.
