Later that day, the leaders of all three systems testified at a New York City Council executive budget hearing to call for support in the face of the $10.34 million in budget cuts to the three library systems in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposed FY22 executive budget—a number that could rise to as much as $22.2 million if City Council declines to re-up its yearly commitment. |

Reviews WEB-FIRST REVIEWS OF BOOKS AND MEDIA Brian Malloy's After Francesco is one of this week's starred fiction selections. "In this highly recommended novel, the pain and rage felt by Kevin and those in the trenches with him [during the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s] is palpable and uncomfortable and real. So too is the love and warmth of spirit they manage to nurture in order to survive." Pete Davis's starred self help selection Dedicated: The Case for Commitment in an Age of Infinite Browsing, "is an excellent purchase for all public libraries.... In this book based on his Harvard Law School graduation speech that went viral, Davis calls for readers to choose to devote themselves to a project or a relationship, and develop loyalty to particulars." Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake, by Alexis Hall, is one of this week's starred romances. "Hall does it again with this culturally relevant, wonderfully escapist foray into the baking world. This is a must-buy for any library." And in performing arts, Melanie Bell's Movie Workers: The Women Who Made British Cinema is this week's starred selection. "Highlighting the often-unseen but important accomplishments of women in film, this is a comprehensive, necessary addition to any cinephile’s collection." See All Reviews››› |
