SCHISM: Back in the summer of 2020, the Mystic Krewe of Nyx was rocked by a membership walkout that reduced its number of float riders from almost 3,500 to 240. What was among the very biggest New Orleans Carnival krewes of all quickly became one of the very smallest. So, what happened to all of those former Nyx sisters, as they were known? Many have scattered into other parading organizations, but about a third of them have formed new sub-krewes that will be rolling within other parades Saturday along the Uptown route. You can watch those parades, and more through Fat Tuesday, via our live Parade Cam. And here's the complete New Orleans parade schedule, with maps.
STATUS QUO: Republicans in the Louisiana Legislature on Friday approved two, identical congressional maps that maintain the status quo of a single majority-Black district while nibbling along the edges of the existing boundaries. The proposals were drawn to protect incumbents and all but guarantee that Louisiana sends five Republicans and one Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives in the congressional midterms this fall.
PACK YOUR BAGS: The Kenner City Council voted 4-0 with three members abstaining Friday to ask Mayor Ben Zahn and his top deputy to resign, saying it had lost confidence in his ability to lead Louisiana's seventh most populous city. The decision came five weeks before Zahn and the council stand for re-election.
