John,

Did you see that CMS released the draft OASIS-D guidance manual last week? For the first time you'll get CMS guidance about how to respond to new items coming to OASIS-D such as what is considered a fall, the time period under consideration for GG items at discharge and how to use new response “10- not attempted due to environmental limitations.” You can read more about it in the breaking news email below.

More importantly, we'll be reviewing details from the 335-page guidance manual at AHCC's Home Health Compliance & Quality Outcomes Conference. Some of the sessions that will cover the OASIS-D Guidance Manual include:

OASIS Data Collection: Is Your Agency Ready for “D” Day?
Cindy Krafft PT, MS, CEO, Kornetti & Krafft Health Care Solutions
Jan. 1, 2019, is right around the corner, and now is the time set up your agency for success as CMS makes changes to OASIS data elements used to standardize patient assessment data points across post-acute settings. While several items will be eliminated, others will be added to show continuity across post-acute care providers. Take a detailed look at the new data your agency will need to collect related to falls, functional assessments, changes in skin integrity and learn how this may impact your agency's outcomes.

CMS releases draft OASIS-D guidance manual, outlines how to respond to new items

For the first time agencies are getting CMS guidance about how to respond to new items coming to OASIS-D.

The 335-page draft OASIS-D guidance manual was published on the CMS website July 3.

Among the new guidance: two new sections of standard guidance covering health conditions as well as functional abilities and goals. Some existing guidance also was revised to update or clarify information.

The manual also takes into account the removal of a number of items, the retirement of illustrative examples and the elimination of Appendix F.

Within Appendix G, CMS provides a table of changes from OASIS-C2 to OASIS-D.

A final draft of OASIS-D is expected to be released in November — prior to final implementation on Jan. 1, 2019, according to CMS.
