The U.S. has more than one million electric vehicles, a number expected to surge over the next decade. That presents enormous opportunities for cities and utilities striving to meet sustainability and other goals, along with significant challenges.

Utility Dive and Smart Cities Dive have collaborated on a two-part special report we're publishing today and tomorrow examining how those challenges are being addressed.

In today's feature, Robert Walton examines how utilities are helping cities around the country increase electrification and move projects forward, while also dealing with increased demands on their systems.

Tomorrow, Chris Teale goes deeper into the steps cities are taking to propel EVs as they look to legislation, incentives and education to address range anxiety and other concerns.

What do you see as the most important challenges and opportunities presented by EVs?
