A Teen Residential Program and Community Counseling Center

October 2018 E-News

There are only three types of people in the world:  Those who don’t know what disc golf is, those who have heard about disc golf and think it’s weird, and those who have played and have fallen in love with the sport.  The boys of the Joy House have caught “disc golf fever.”  Many of their afternoons are spent throwing these Frisbee-like discs all over campus into the few disc golf baskets we currently have.  It is a great exercise and provides the boys with a challenging outlet to push themselves to improve.  The sport is played just like regular golf, but Frisbee-like discs are used instead of a ball.  Rather than aiming for a hole, players aim for a metal basket with chains that catch the discs as they fly through the air.  What is impressive is how far these kids can throw these discs.  Some of the boys are already throwing over 300 feet in distance!
We are grateful for yet another successful golf tournament this year. The rain did not deter us from enjoying the day and "teeing up for teens" for the 12th time. Click HERE to view our online photo album of the day. Thank you to all of our sponsors and players for your support.

Counselor's Corner - Why Seek Counsel?

By: Bill Wattenbarger, PhD - Counselor

Why seek counsel?  The most common answer:  to dispatch our problems by gaining understanding.  We think that when life presents a challenge which leaves us confused, uncertain and unhappy, maybe someone else, perhaps with special knowledge, can help us understand what’s wrong or what needs to be done.
The search for wisdom and understanding is age-old and well-advised.  Even God’s people are said to perish (behave without restraint) for lack of revelation (understanding/vision/knowledge), Proverbs 29:18.  James 1:5 advises, if one lacks wisdom, they should just ask God and he will supply without criticizing, with proper deference to revelation and the keeping of the law.  And of course there is always the renewing of the mind in Romans 12:2 with its specific reference to knowing the will of God.
