Friend,
When we said that Congress was going to scramble this month to pass legislation and it was critical that we pay attention to the details, this is EXACTLY the kind of thing we were talking about ...
We know how important it is to address the lack of quality journalism and reporting — especially in unserved and underserved communities across the country. Unfortunately, instead of addressing these issues head on, the Senate has started moving the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA).
This industry-written bill would give media conglomerates like Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. an “antitrust exemption” to collectively negotiate with powerful online platforms like Facebook and Google — and we need to stop it with everything we’ve got. Sign our petition to tell the Senate: Vote no on the JCPA!
The JCPA would do nothing to help local reporters or expand coverage in communities that aren't being served. And to top it all off, the bill would make it harder to fight online hate and disinformation.
If Congress really wants to promote local journalism, we have plenty of other ideas for how it could do it that don’t involve massive giveaways to broadcasters with a track record of harming communities of color and giving a huge megaphone to right-wing talking points.
This is exactly the kind of legislation we have to fight if we want to ensure that every community has quality local journalism. Will you sign our petition to stop the JCPA now?
Thanks for all that you do—

P.S. Congress should reject any bill that would pad the profits of big-media companies and harm smaller outlets that feature diverse and dissenting viewpoints. Tell the Senate to vote NO on the JCPA. |
