COVID-19 surge: The December 2021 coronavirus surge brought the highest number, by far, of new cases and hospitalizations that Ohio has seen since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of cases reported over the seven-day period starting Dec. 24 was 105,104, a significant increase over the prior week’s seven-day total of 81,624, Jane Morice reports. Additionally, the state broke its single-day coronavirus case record that had been set just one week prior. On Dec. 23, the record was set at 15,989 reported cases. That record was broken Dec. 29, with 20,320 newly reported cases, and again Dec. 31, with 20,598 cases.
Bibb takes oath: A small handful of family and friends were on hand as Justin Bibb was sworn in by Judge Michael L. Nelson Sr. as Cleveland’s 58th mayor just after midnight today. The ceremony took place in front of about 20 guests and a dozen members of the media at the East 131st Street branch of the Cleveland Public Library, the library Bibb frequented growing up in Cleveland. David Petkiewicz has photos from the ceremony.
Officer shooting: An 18-year-old woman was charged Sunday in the fatal shooting of an off-duty Cleveland police officer during a carjacking, Adam Ferrise reports. Tamara McLoyd of Garfield Heights is charged with aggravated murder in the shooting of officer Shane Bartek, 25. Police say McLoyd "ambushed" Bartek about 6 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Rocky River Drive in the city’s Kamm’s Corners neighborhood
Homicides: Cleveland ended 2021 with 170 homicides, the second worst year for homicides in the city since there were 175 in 1991. The total is down from 2020’s 193 homicides, the worst year for homicides since 1982, Adam Ferrise reports. The FBI’s crime data show homicides nationally rose about 30 percent, the largest single-year increase since the agency began tracking crime stats in the 1960s. Kaylee Remington reports homicides in suburban Cleveland also increased. METRO Frank Jackson: Outgoing Mayor Frank Jackson issued a letter Friday to all Clevelanders, thanking city residents for working alongside him for more than three decades while he was a member and president of City Council and four-term mayor. Hannah Drown has the letter in its entirety. Meanwhile, David Petikiewicz chronicles Jackson's career in photos.
Electric cars: If you have been seriously thinking about buying an electric vehicle, Peter Krouse reports you are not alone. Industry experts now say in a matter of decades the internal combustion engine could largely fade away. That may seem unlikely in Ohio, where “progressive” is a dirty word and EV adoption lags other states its size, but some trends just seem inevitable.
Apartments: Despite cranes in many parts of the Cleveland area, the number of apartments added to the area in 2021 was relatively low compared to recent years, Eric Heisig reports. Developers and those who follow the local real estate industry said next year should more than make up for any deficit, through either additional new or renovated buildings.
Indigenous community: Most educational curriculums teach about Native Americans during the early days of European settlement, including wars. But members of Cleveland’s Indigenous community want to be recognized as a thriving part of contemporary society, Cameron Fields reports.
Climate change: Want to reduce heart attacks? First, stop climate change. A scientific review, written by researchers from University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University and Boston College, shows that air pollution promotes heart disease, and draws a direct link between environmental pollutants and climate change. Julie Washington reports the research team concluded that the global epidemic of cardiovascular disease can only be contained by combining pollution prevention with control of individual risk factors.
COVID-19 New cases: The Ohio Department of Health on Sunday reported 37,626 new coronavirus cases, a two-day tally of New Year’s Day and Sunday totals, Jane Morice reports. Ohio’s death toll since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 now stands at 29,447. This figure comes after a comparatively large number reported this week, 727.
Testing: Ohio’s coronavirus test positivity rate these days is averaging about 25%, but that’s almost certainly lower than reality, Gov. Mike DeWine said. DeWine and Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said it’s guaranteed that some people don’t report their positive results, Laura Hancock reports.
Vaccine queen: The frustration over the coronavirus that gripped Stacey Bene nearly two years ago returned Saturday. Bene and Marla Zwinggi became widely known as the “Vaccine Queens” for their help in getting more than 2,300 Northeast Ohio residents access to vaccines. The mother of three from Medina has tested positive for the virus, which is dangerous for her because she suffers from cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects a person’s lungs.
CRIME Elyria shooting: A 28-year-old man died early Saturday morning following a shooting in downtown Elyria. The shooting happened about 3:30 a.m. New Year’s Day on Kerstetter Way, just off Ely Square in the city’s downtown, Jane Morice reports. Officials identified the victim as Dominique Anderson, 28, of Elyria.
Shooting, stabbing: One woman was stabbed and one man was shot, seemingly during the same incident at an East Cleveland apartment building Sunday. Initial reports to police said "numerous people" had been shot in the apartment building on Terrace Road near the intersection of North Taylor Road, Jane Morice reports.
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Cleveland Orchestra: Starting today, people attending Cleveland Orchestra events must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test to get into the venue. pecifically, when it comes to the term “full vaccination,” that includes a booster shot, Anne Nickoloff reports.
Bike trails: TourismOhio’s map of Ohio bikeways includes 21 major bike trails and trail networks. The crown jewel, the Ohio to Erie Trail, stretches 326 miles from Cincinnati to Cleveland and is almost entirely off road. For riders looking for new adventures in 2022, John Pana lists the trails and includes a GPS map for each.
