Death increase: The number of deaths from all causes last year in Ohio far exceeded previous years, with an increase well above the 9,500 that have been attributed to the coronavirus, Rich Exner reports. Preliminary data from the Ohio Department of Health shows that 139,072 Ohioans died in 2020, up 17,225 from the average of 121,847 over the past five years.
Trump's tweets: How did people buy into President Trump’s lies? A new study titled “The Art of the Spiel: Analyzing Donald Trump’s Tweets As Gonzo Storytelling” aims to explain, at least in part, how an alternate reality was crafted using social media during the time leading up to Trump’s election in 2016. Seth Richardson reports the study looked at 3,876 tweets to see how Trump used the platform as a storyteller to launch his rise to the highest office in the land.

New numbers: The Ohio Department of Health reported 4,312 new coronavirus cases Monday, bringing the overall total to 831,066 cases, Cameron Fields reports. There were 81 additional deaths, increasing the total to 10,281. On Sunday, Ohio reported 5,247 new cases and 65 deaths. Monday’s new number of cases were below the 21-day rolling average of 7,430 cases. The deaths were at the 21-day rolling average of 81. Cuyahoga numbers: COVID-19-related deaths in Cuyahoga County seemed to jump dramatically last week, from 83 during the week ending Jan. 2 to 158 during the week ending Jan. 9, Courtney Astolfi reports. Board spokesman Kevin Brennan said Friday that the increase could be the result of a lag in the reporting, meaning deaths from two weeks ago were assigned to the numbers from last week.
Ken Johnson: Federal authorities brought criminal charges against a Cleveland recreation worker Friday that stem from an FBI investigation linked to Council Kenneth Johnson. Prosecutors filed the charge of conspiracy to commit theft from a federal program against Robert Fitzpatrick in a bill of information in U.S. District Court, John Caniglia reports. The FBI’s public corruption squad for years was investigating Johnson and the Buckeye-Shaker Square Development Corp., a now-defunct development organization that Johnson supported with tax dollars. Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley tells Robert Higgs that City Council will make no attempts to remove Johnson from office. City Council’s rules allow for the removal of members, but Kelley says he doesn't know if those provisions had ever been invoked.
Police shooting: Two Kent police officers were released from the hospital Saturday after being shot while responding to a 14-year-old babysitter’s report of a home invasion. Cameron Fields reports the teen was babysitting a 1-year-old when she called 9-1-1, whispering “He’s trying to get in,” as she hid in the house. Police say officers Lenny Kunka and Kyle Auckland were wounded as they struggled with the suspect, Dante Dixon, who had a handgun. Dixon also was wounded.
Liz Walters: Ohio Democrats hope Liz Walters can navigate them out of their bleakest political time in decades as state party chair. Walters, a Summit County councilwoman, is the first woman to be elected chair of the state party. She won unanimous support from the party’s executive committee and speaks to Seth Richardson about her role.
Coping through COVID: Susan Mikolic’s guiding principle was tested when she became ill with a presumed case of COVID-19 in March. Despite a month spent in isolation and ongoing neurological problems that have made her rely on a wheelchair and robbed her of independence, Mikolic is determined to see the upside of her illness. Julie Washington reports in the mental health series, Coping through COVID.
MLK Day meals: Nearly 1,000 meals were provided Monday during the Edwins Day of Giving at Randall Park High School in North Randall. Recipients were given meals that consisted of some of Martin Luther King Jr.'s favorites, including black-eyed peas, chicken, and cornbread. David Petkiewicz has photos of the event.
Joe Marinucci: Joe Marinucci, the president and CEO of the economic development nonprofit Downtown Cleveland Alliance since its inception, will retire in April. The alliance’s transition committee, led by board Chairman TJ Asher and Vice Chairwoman Karen Paganini, will search for his replacement, reports Eric Heisig.
Spring break: Would-be travelers, hunkered down at home for the past 10 months, are eager to hit the road again. But travel-health experts are urging both patience and caution, even as an increasing number of Americans are receiving vaccines protecting them against COVID-19. Susan Glaser reports that it’s probably best to skip an elaborate spring break trip this year and set your sights on summer vacation instead.

Barricelli Inn: Developers plan to turn a Little Italy historic mansion known for decades as a restaurant and bed and breakfast into apartments. Michael Panzica and Brad Nosan want to add 12 or 13 units inside the Barricelli Inn building at Cornell Road and Murray Hill, reports Eric Heisig.
Agora residential: The office building connected to the famous Agora Theatre in Cleveland’s Midtown neighborhood has new owners who plan to convert some of the rambling building into apartments. Eric Heisig reports that Asaf Gishron of the Hungary-based Sabor Group confirmed that the company and a firm in Geauga County now control the Euclid Avenue building, which is about 90 percent filled with tenants.
Opioid block: A federal judge has temporarily stopped a Toledo pharmacy from dispensing opioids and other controlled substances as authorities investigate its business practices. John Caniglia reports that Shaffer Pharmacy was ordered to avoid destroying or altering records in its possession.
Liquor citations: Five Northeast Ohio bars were cited Saturday for violating the orders put in place by the Ohio Department of Health in order to try and curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Jane Morice reports the Ohio Investigative Unit cited Papa Don’s Pub in Akron, Backstage Bar in Cleveland, In the Drink in Fairview Park, Riverwood Café in Lakewood and Shadows Bar & Grill, Parma Heights. During the Browns game on Sunday, the downtown Harry Buffalo and Cebars Euclid Tavern were cited.
Tennis star: Naomi Osaka is currently training for the Australian Open, musing, "I'll probably be nervous when I get there. I'm not so sure,” in this video from cleveland.com’s sister site, Vogue.
