Northeast Ohio weather forecast: Get ready for more snow this weekend

An Ohio legislative study committee has released a lengthy list of proposals to help homeowners worried about hikes in their property tax bills (like the one above from Cuyahoga County). But it remains to be seen what measures lawmakers will actually pass, given ideological differences on how much the rich should be included in relief measures and how much money the state should give local governments to offset lost revenue. Property taxes: After months of effort, a legislative study committee has given lawmakers a list of options to help a major problem for Ohio homeowners: how to afford and restrain hikes in their local property taxes as their home values jump. The question now, however, is what – if anything – will be done to address the property-tax problem by state lawmakers, who agree it’s a top priority but remain split on what they should do about it, Jeremy Pelzer reports.

Mike White: One of the most recognizable faces in Cleveland during the 1990s belonged to its energetic, no-nonsense mayor, Michael R. White. While White hasn’t been in the news much since leaving public life, John Pana heard a story from a former gang-leader-turned-public official who had a run-in with him back in the day. White confirmed the incident really happened.

Security costs: A U.S. Congress member from Ohio wants the federal government to foot local law-enforcement bills for protecting soon-to-be Vice President JD Vance when he’s at home in Cincinnati. Sabrina Eaton reports U.S. Rep. Greg Landsman, a Cincinnati Democrat, wants the Secret Service’s parent agency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to repay state and local law-enforcement agencies for any services, personnel, equipment and facilities they deploy to support the Secret Service’s protective mission.

Hopkins traffic: Monthly passenger traffic continues to decline at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, due to ongoing airline cutbacks. Susan Glaser reports Spirit Airlines, which is currently in bankruptcy proceedings, has cut the most – down 88% in seat capacity at Hopkins in November compared to a year ago. United Airlines, the largest carrier at Hopkins, has cut capacity, as well – down 9.7% in November 2024 compared to the same period a year ago.

County Council: Cuyahoga County Council on Thursday unanimously voted in longtime member Dale Miller to lead the body, replacing former President Pernel Jones, Jr., who nominated him for the position, Kaitlin Durbin reports.

Business and Health

Whooping cough: Whooping cough, a highly infectious respiratory infection that laid low in recent years, has come roaring back, Julie Washington reports. In Ohio, whooping cough cases have doubled in a year, spiking from nearly 800 in 2023 to about 1,600 cases as of mid-December, according to federal data. Nationally, whooping cough was at its highest level in a decade for the fall.

COVID-19 cases: The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio spiked by more than 2,000 cases, rising from 5,555 last week to 8,018 this week, the state reported Thursday. It was the fifth straight week that Ohio’s COVID-19 cases have increased, Julie Washington reports.

Medicare costs: Millions of Medicare beneficiaries will save money when a $2,000 cap on their prescription drug costs went into effect on Wednesday. The cap is part of the Inflation Reduction Act that President Joe Biden signed into law in 2022, Sabrina Eaton reports.

Crime and Courts

Rapper's slaying: Police continue to investigate what led to Sunday's fatal shooting of Carlos Banks, a Cleveland rapper who went by the name of KashBankx. Police have yet to say whether any arrests have been made or whether suspects have been connected to the case, and no new details from the Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office have been released, Lucas Daprile reports.

Hiring: A former task force officer of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration under federal investigation involving an off-duty attack at a bar was hired as a Portage County sheriff’s deputy, records show. Adam Ferrise reports Daniel Lajack was hired Dec. 23, less than a month after he resigned in lieu of being fired from the Lake County Narcotics Agency amid an internal investigation over the April incident, according to state records.

Cybertruck bomber: The man who was reportedly responsible for blowing up a car outside Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel had several connections to Ohio, Lucas Daprile reports. Matthew Livelsberger, identified by the Associated Press and other outlets as the suspect, owns a home in Cuyahoga Falls, attended an Ohio high school and lived in Westerville in 2011, records show.
