Local scores: Indians 8, Kansas City Royals 3 OVERNIGHT
Gerrymandering lawsuit: The Ohio Redistricting Commission has been sued for a third time over new gerrymandered maps for the state House and Senate. Laura Hancock reports the Monday complaint was filed by the Ohio Environmental Counsel, the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Ohio -- which represents the Ohio Muslim Community -- and the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, a group that works for racial, social and economic justice.
East Cleveland: Once home to the Rockefeller fortune, East Cleveland is so cash-strapped that it cannot pay out major damages in lawsuits and some attorneys are refusing to take cases against the city. John Caniglia reports that this eliminates a major check on the city’s power, in a series on the police chases that terrify this city.
Clinic capacity: The Cleveland Clinic is now seeing its highest volume of COVID-19 patients since last winter, causing long wait times in Clinic emergency departments and fewer nonessential surgeries. Julie Washington reports the Clinic’s forecasts predict the highest volumes of COVID-19 patients will come in the next several weeks. In addition, Akron’s Summa Health System announced plans to decrease its bed capacity by more than 20% at its Akron and Barberton campuses because of staffing shortages and increased demand for healthcare services.
OSHA fine: Alvin Kelly Jr. had worked at General Aluminum’s engineered automotive castings plant in Ravenna for just over two months on March 30 when the 200-pound barrier door of a machine he was loading closed on his head and killed him. The 43-year-old minister left behind a wife and four children. Now the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommended that the company pay $1,671,738 in penalties, reports Sabrina Eaton. Booster shots: Americans who are eligible for a booster shot of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine have questions about side-effects, when they should get a shot and where they can go to get one. Julie Washington reports on what you need to know.
Land bridge: Cleveland City Council gave approval Monday for the city to spend $2.5 million on a preliminary impact study of an ambitious plan to extend the downtown Mall to the Lake Erie waterfront. The project would extend a land bridge from Mall C in downtown to connect with the waterfront area around FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns, Robert Higgs reports.
2022: Former state Sen. Nina Turner has filed paperwork to run in a 2022 Democratic primary rematch against Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Shontel Brown, who won a hotly contested special election congressional primary this year. Seth Richardson reports Brown beat Turner in the August primary by slightly more than 4,300 votes in a race flooded with outside money in the final weeks.
This Week in the CLE: A top aide to Gov. Mike DeWine with ties to a dark-money group implicated in the ongoing FirstEnergy bribery scandal resigned Friday. We’re talking about why Dan McCarthy, DeWine’s legislative director, is taking “a break” from the intensity of Statehouse negotiations on This Week in the CLE, cleveland.com’s daily half-hour news podcast.
Property values: Some areas in Cuyahoga County, such as parts of eastern Lakewood, saw property values jump 42% from 2018. At the same time, small pockets of a few south and eastern suburbs actually fell a little. Eric Heisig looks at the how pockets of homes were affected.
Brandywine: The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park bought the former Brandywine Golf Course, a 207-acre plot located on both sides of Akron-Peninsula Road south of Peninsula, Megan Becka reports. Funding for the purchase came from individual donors and recoverable grants from the Northeast Ohio community and national foundations, including the Akron Community Foundation, Connor Foundation, GAR Foundation and National Park Foundation.
Minh Anh: The owner of beloved Detroit-Shoreway Vietnamese restaurant Minh Anh, which closed earlier this month after 37 years, has sold the building and adjoining properties to developers erecting a large apartment building next door, reports Eric Heisig.
Airport funding: Money from the Federal Aviation Administration will help concession operations at city-owned Cleveland Hopkins International Airport stay afloat until passenger traffic returns to normal, Robert Higgs reports.
Indians score board: Monday afternoon’s home game against the Kansas City Royals is the last time Cleveland baseball fans will see the massive “Indians” name tower over Progressive Field while taking in a ballgame. City Planning Commission documents released Monday offer a glimpse of the new look, with a script aluminum sign bearing the new Guardians name perched atop the ballpark’s scoreboard, reports Eric Heisig.
I Promise: The principal at I Promise School has been placed on paid leave after being accused of slapping a student. Olivia Mitchell reports Principal Brandi Davis will remain on paid leave until the investigation is complete.
Ticket prices: Cleveland Public Theatre has gotten rid of set ticket prices altogether for all of its upcoming events, instead instituting a “choose what you pay” policy. Anne Nickoloff reports that on CPT’s website, “choose what you pay” tickets are available for as low as $1.
Meme fraud: Many classic memes were recently auctioned off for big bucks. But how do you determine meme ownership? Don Caldwell and his team from Know Your Meme have been using their extensive knowledge of meme history to thwart fraud, as shown in this video from cleveland.com’s sister site, Wired.
Michael Stanley: Michael Stanley was one of the greatest musicians in Northeast Ohio history and he will have another celebration befitting his impressive legacy. On Friday, Dec. 3, Live Nation and classic rock station WNCX FM/98.5 will put on “Michael Stanley, Among My Friends Again” at the MGM Northfield Park, reports Troy Smith.
