Ohio State University has been given immunity from a class-action lawsuit challenging fees charged to students during the coronavirus pandemic. |

Student fees: A state appellate court has determined that Ohio State University has immunity from a class-action lawsuit over the school not refunding certain fees when it closed campus at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Laura Hancock reports. A three-judge panel of the Columbus-based Ohio 10th District Court of Appeals decided 3-0 that Ohio State used a high degree of judgment when deciding which fees to refund, which fees to partially refund and which fees to not refund. FirstEnergy cases: Those waiting for a resolution on the bribery cases against FirstEnergy Corp.’s CEO and senior vice president are going to have to wait a little longer. Maybe a lot longer. Jake Zuckerman reports a review of the remaining action suggests three of the four remain mired in early stage legal squabbles unlikely to resolve quickly or easily. And the cases are increasingly intersecting, with one hampering or slowing down the other. Liquor prices: The old adage that liquor sales are recession-proof, or that sellers can withstand changes to the economy, hasn’t stopped price increases for liquor sold in Ohio stores in recent years. Like the price of a carton of eggs or a tank of gas, state data shows the price of many brands of liquor increased in Ohio compared with the price before the pandemic, Laura Hancock reports. |

Medicaid: The Ohio Department of Medicaid is once again asking the federal government, soon under new management of GOP president-elect Donald Trump, for permission to impose a work, education, or drug and alcohol rehabilitation requirement on citizens seeking publicly funded health insurance, Jake Zuckerman reports. |

Roller derby: Two adult roller derby teams have taken up residence at the Cleveland Heights Community Recreation Center, which over the past two years has become the roller derby capital of the region. Peter Chakerian reports the teams have attracted (and built) quite a community. |

MetroHealth CEO: Christine Alexander-Rager is the new CEO for the MetroHealth System, the third since 2022. Perhaps one of her toughest challenges will be completing the delayed Campus Transformation project, which has changed radically since its inception, leading to skyrocketing costs. Julie Washington has a profile on Alexander-Rager. |

Fatal shooting: One person is dead after a shooting Saturday morning at the Frozen Daiquiri Bar & Restaurant in downtown Cleveland. Megan Sims reports that police tell WKYC Channel 3 that investigators learned there had been a physical altercation between the victim and an unknown male suspect around 2:20 a.m. Painesville deaths: A couple was found dead Thursday night in an apparent murder-suicide, Painesville police said. Celija Vidovic, 58, and Dragon Vidovic, 62, were found dead in their Cherrywood Lane home in the city’s Heisley Park neighborhood, Kaylee Remington reports. |
