Student quarantine: Ohio will no longer quarantine students who were exposed to the coronavirus in the classroom, as long as students were wearing masks properly, Gov. Mike DeWine said Wednesday. This new rule only applies to cases in the classroom, not in extracurriculars, Emily Bamforth reports. Students should quarantine if mask protocols weren’t being followed at time of exposure.
Sexual assault: As the year ends with a suspension of jury trials in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, advocates worry that survivors of sexual assault whose cases impacted by the delay could be left feeling ignored. Cleveland Rape Crisis Center Chief Advocacy Officer Teresa Stafford and advocate Alisa Alfaro called on the courts to do everything possible to keep cases moving forward, Cory Shaffer reports. The center says the court's delay impacted more than 100 sexual assault cases, including one case scheduled to go to trial in March and has now been pending for more than two years.
Inmate death: Romell Broom the man convicted of killing 14-year-old Tryna Middleton in September 1984 in Cleveland, died Monday because of the coronavirus, John Caniglia reports. Broom, 64, became the first person in Ohio to survive an execution attempt when, in 2009, prison officials could not find a vein sturdy enough to accept a lethal drug cocktail. Broom is the second death-row inmate in Ohio to succumb to the virus. James Frazier died last month. Vaccine distribution: With possibly as many as 435,000 coronavirus vaccines in cold storage in Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine says institutions with doses must give shots within 24 hours to move to eradicate the virus, Laura Hancock reports. As of Wednesday, 94,078 doses have been administered in the state, but Ohio has been given just over 529,000. That means organizations are sitting on them and DeWine says he’s hearing the state is having problems reporting vaccination administration accurately. “There’s a moral imperative to get this out just as quickly as we can,” DeWine says.
DoorDash fee: Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley is publicly criticizing DoorDash, a food-delivery service, for imposing a new $1 “Cleveland fee” on customers for meals delivered from restaurants in the city. Peter Krouse reports Kelley is accusing the company of undermining council’s efforts to protect restaurants that are struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic by capping surcharges that DoorDash and its competitors charge restaurants for using the companies’ apps.
