Ohio’s unusual statewide summer election is over and it ended with an emphatic early bang. After an unexpectedly enthusiastic turnout for early voting, the final voters had their say on State Issue 1 as they cast their ballots Tuesday. With 2.5 million votes counted after 10 p.m., Issue 1 trailed by a large 57% to 43% margin Tuesday night. The race was decisive enough that the Associated Press called it just before 9 p.m. Ohio voters rejected Republican lawmakers’ attempt to make it harder for the public to propose and approve changes to the state constitution. The Aug. 8 special election has drawn national attention because of its ramifications for a November vote on an abortion-rights amendment.
