Good morning. Temperatures will be in the upper teens to mid-30s from north to south with mostly sunny skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

One of Old Town’s oldest homes falls victim to rezoning

  • Often called the Jameson homestead, the house was built sometime between 1830 and 1840 and was said to have belonged to former Civil War Gen. Charles Davis Jameson. In December, it was torn down as a victim of rezoning-- and with it, a symbol of Old Town’s history in the Civil War vanished.
Former cop sues Penobscot County DA, saying she used false information to discredit him
  • The officer claims that prosecutor Marianne Lynch never investigated the allegations she received from his former supervisor, which the supervisor has since recanted. She put that information in a file of officers whose testimony at trial could be impeached by defense lawyers.

Bangor psychiatric unit started under LePage now expected to serve elderly patients

  • While former Gov. Paul LePage once intended the Bangor facility to house patients who needed an intermediate level of care after leaving Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta, Gov. Janet Mills announced early last year that her administration was re-evaluating its purpose.
With $3.6M, Maine’s community colleges train 180 for free to work in high-demand fields
  • Nancy Taylor Taylor is in a one-year, medical assisting certificate program at Eastern Maine Community College whose costs are fully covered thanks to a $3.6 million Harold Alfond Foundation grant.
Parents become activists in the fight over South Portland’s petroleum tanks

  • After months of inconclusive monitoring, fearful moms demand a meeting with the state as they search for ways to limit toxic emissions that fill the air.
Test finds highest portion of Maine seed potatoes rejected due to pathogens since 2012
  • Maine Potato Board plant pathologist and lab manager Andrew Plant said during a meeting Wednesday that the 2019-2020 results of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s annual post-harvest test was the worst since 2012-2013. Pathogens that can cause seed potatoes to rot in storage or hamper sprouting have nearly doubled since last year.
A timing quirk is making it hard for third-party Senate candidate to make Maine’s ballot

  • An election timing quirk is making an uphill attempt for a third-party U.S. Senate candidate to get on the 2020 ballot even harder in an unforeseen consequence of Maine’s switch from presidential caucuses to a March presidential primary.

That change could affect the slate of candidates in Sen. Susan Collins’ heavily nationalized re-election race in November. Four Democrats are vying in a June primary for the nomination to oppose the Republican. A Green and four independents are trying to get on the ballot as well.

Tulsi Gabbard drew a big Maine crowd, but they can’t all help her win the Democratic presidential nod
  • Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii spoke extensively about the harm of partisanship, saying the president was supposed to “serve all Americans.” She asked members of the audience — a crowd of more than 200 — to raise their hands based on party affiliation. The bulk of the crowd identified as Green or independent, with some Democrats and a few Republicans in the mix.
Why Maine’s doctors and researchers want to watch you sleep

  • Certain factors in Maine make the struggle for sleep in the Pine Tree State unique. Clifford Singer, chief of Geriatric Mental Health and Neuropsychiatry at Northern Light Acadia Hospital, has been studying sleep for more than 30 years. He said two factors stand above the rest when it comes to understanding sleep in Maine: the aging population and the sunlight, or lack thereof.
