There will be no "Re-Pete" of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center if and when LSU builds its new multipurpose sports and entertainment arena near Alex Box Stadium. Not if preliminary images obtained by The Advocate are any indication. Renderings show three versions of what the facility's exterior could look like. The name on all three? Our Lady of the Lake Arena. A spokesperson for OLOL confirmed to The Advocate on Friday that Baton Rouge's mega healthcare provider has pursued an agreement to have its name attached to the venue. As we told you in our previous LSU newsletter, the whole project is a long way from a ribbon cutting. Especially since the founder and CEO of the firm expected to build and run the arena has been indicted by a federal grand jury (never something you want) for shady doings involving his firm's building of the Moody Center at Texas in Austin. So we'll see where all this goes, but could you see yourself going to a game or a meet or a concert one day at OLOL Arena? It's interesting to imagine. Friday was surprisingly newsy for a July Friday on the LSU sports scene. Our Wilson Alexander tells us about the continued front office transformation of the LSU football program, with Brian Kelly poaching some key player personnel pieces from several successful programs around the country. Remember when the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that Ed Orgeron had to give half his $17-plus million buyout to his ex wife Kelly? Well, the former LSU coach, as you would expect, is fighting back with a squadron of lawyers. Yours truly spoke to LSU gymnastics coach Jay Clark on Friday and got an update on gymnastics and beach volleyball strength and conditioning coach Katie Guillory. She had part of her left leg amputated after a July 4 jet ski accident. LSU baseball recruiting is also in the news, as a Tiger pitching signee has made it public that he's formally foregoing the MLB draft to play for the reigning College World Series champions. Koki Riley also has a look at the MLB draft prospects for LSU slugger Ethan Frey and a host of other Tigers. Finally, are you planning to go to the LSU football game at Alabama in November? United Airlines has put in a direct flight from Baton Rouge to Birmingham to help get you there. That's all for today, folks. Speaking of airliners, Wilson and I are going to jump on one Sunday to head to Atlanta for SEC Media Days. Monday, Kelly and players Garrett Nussmeier, Whit Weeks and Chris Hilton will be taking part in the first day of the four-day event held at the College Football Hall of Fame. We'll catch up then. Meanwhile, enjoy your sports weekend, everyone. Scott Rabalais |
