| Dear Readers,
If you've been waiting for a non-musical version of Victor Hugo's classic Les Misérables, your moment has arrived. Being a fan of musicals and this one in particular, I sang off-key in front of my television when PBS aired Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 in 2011. I definitely shed a few tears as well. This new adaptation — starring Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) as fugitive Jean Valjean and David Oyelowo (Selma, Small Island) as his relentless pursuer Javert — should pack no less an emotional punch. I'm particularly excited to see Lily Collins (Love, Rosie) as the luckless single mother Fantine and recent Best Actress Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite ) as Cosette's cruel caretaker Madame Thénardier.
Happy watching,
Whitney Phaneuf Editor, On KQED |
