The Trump administration has drastically reduced the size and influence of the State Department, leaving key positions unfilled and proposing massive cuts to the foreign aid budget. Many Republicans have joined Democrats in criticizing this effort to sideline diplomats, and both Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders have pledged to reinvest in diplomacy.
