39 years later, ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ Cataract Canyon rapids are expected again
Flowing southwest from Moab down to Lake Powell is a stretch of the Colorado River called Cataract Canyon, which has become known for its world-class whitewater rapids.
During a typical spring runoff, peaking around the middle of June, the river will run around 50,000 cubit feet per second (which is equivalent to 350 million gallons of water passing by any given point each second).
But this year, following Utah's snowiest winter in decades, there’s a chance Cataract Canyon will double that volume of water, challenging the high-water marks of 1983 (104,700 CFS) and 1984 (114,900) — the two biggest water years since record-keeping began in 1928.
“We’ll see if that was a once in a lifetime experience, or if we get another one,” says professional river runner Myke Hughes, owner of Adrift Adventures, and someone who experienced the high water of '84 firsthand.
Hughes and other Moab-based river runners are expecting the high water levels to attract thrill-seekers as the already impressive rapids are transformed into water features as big as "any whitewater in the world."

For the last week, the NBA world — executives, coaches, scouts, agents and team psychologists — made their way to Chicago for the draft lottery and combine.
The Jazz took a huge group that included the team's general manager and CEO. In the end, the Jazz were assigned the ninth, 16th and 28th overall picks in the NBA draft.
But while there are many on the outside that view the Windy City events as the final stage in the draft prep process, for those involved, it is merely the beginning of the final stage.
Here are just some of the important steps that will take place before the June 22 draft:
Many in the aforementioned group will travel to Los Angeles this week, where some of the top prospects will take part in pro day workouts.
In early June, the Jazz will be represented in Italy at the Adidas Eurocamp, which highlights some of the most highly touted European prospects.
Before, in between and after those showcases, the Jazz will be bringing prospects to Utah to work out in person and conduct even more extensive interviews.
Read more about the process and what the Jazz are looking for as they interview prospective players.
