TJC at ASHE: New water management standard specifies requirements

Your facility will need diagrams or schematics of its water system and a way to address stagnant water under the new requirements set out by a new standard from The Joint Commission (TJC).

The new Environment of Care standard EC.02.05.02 requires hospitals to have a water management program “in accordance with law and regulation.”

Hackers legally off the hook in patient's death but maybe not in future

On September 11, 2020, an elderly woman in Germany was rushed to the University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD) with a life-threatening aortic aneurysm. However, when the ambulance arrived at UKD, they discovered the facility had been crippled by a ransomware attack.

Relying on "old school" methods during a ransomware attack

When your facility can’t access its medical records, operate its equipment, and properly care for patients, that’s not a problem—it’s an emergency, said Kelly Proctor, CHFM, CHSP, CHOP, director of operations for DNV GL Healthcare, during DNV GL’s 2020 Virtual Conference in October. When your systems go down, your facility needs to be ready to switch back to paper records and runners in an instant.

Saving money and water in healthcare

As clean water becomes harder to find, it becomes more expensive. And healthcare facilities use a lot of water.

The EPA says healthcare facilities account for 7% of all commercial and institutional water use, making them the third largest water consumers of all buildings in the U.S. One study found that hospitals use about 570 gallons of water per bed per day, compared to the 150 gallons the average citizen uses per day.

The CMS Conditions of Participation and Interpretive Guidelines

Compliance with the Conditions of Participation (CoP) is required to meet Medicare and Medicaid hospital regulations. While CMS posts updates to the CoPs on its website, they are often difficult to search and lengthy, not to mention tedious to print.

This is where HCPro comes in! We have taken the most recent version of CMS’ CoPs and the corresponding Interpretive Guidelines (IG) and reprinted them in an easy-to-use format to simplify your job. CMS updates the CoPs a few times a year. This new edition contains the most recent CoPs and Survey and Certification memos, which include new requirements on discharge planning, burden reduction, and antibiotic stewardship.
