Living fossil: Animal thought to be extinct rediscovered on Madagascar

It’s a sad fact of life that animals go extinct. Whether by natural means or human intervention, the loss of a species is a loss for science. But amazingly, a breed of reptile that hasn’t been seen in a century has just been rediscovered on the island of Madagascar. Dubbed Voeltzkow’s chameleon, the lizard only comes out during the island’s rainy season — and features a brilliant set of scales that change to bright colors during pregnancy.

They have short lifespans once they emerge from their eggs, making them more like mayflies than reptiles. How did scientists go 100 years without spotting them? Well, it’s a chameleon! They’re hard to see. Have you ever seen a chameleon change color in real-time? It’s amazing.
