Peak color is right around the corner🍂 |
If you have been itching to know what the fall colors look like in Northern Michigan before making the trek, you might be in luck with the help of a few cameras. Four livestream cameras near Cadillac at Caberfae Peaks and Coyote Crossings Resort are just starting to show fall color changes. Peak color is still a few days away, with Oct. 20-26 being the best timeframe for the area, according to the latest Pure Michigan fall color update. While you are Up North, be sure to take in the fall color from above by hopping on a chairlift at the Shanty Creek Resort near Bellaire. The rides are $8 per person and run each weekend until Oct. 20. |

One of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in the entire U.S. is in Michigan |
Gaining recognition: One of Michigan’s most historic neighborhoods, Detroit's Corktown, has been named one of the most up-and-coming areas in the entire country. National travel publication, Travel Mag, listed 16 places in the country on its Most Up-and-Coming Neighborhoods in the U.S. list. The oldest neighborhood in Detroit, Corktown, is the only Michigan neighborhood to make the cut. Renewable energy: A plan to install solar panels at a massive former Grand Rapids landfill site to help power the city’s buildings, street lights and signals in the coming years got a state funding boost of $3 million. As the city of Grand Rapids considers a $544 million Transformational Brownfield subsidy for a massive, mixed-use riverfront development, one group of residents is asking for a bigger investment in low-income housing. |

First Lady Jill Biden to campaign for Kamala Harris in Detroit Monday |
Campaign stop: First Lady Jill Biden plans to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday, Oct. 14, in the Detroit suburbs, officials with the campaign said. No additional details about the time and venue or venues were immediately available. Immigration and the automotive industry were top of mind for several hundred voters gathered Tuesday afternoon at Detroit's Eastern Market as Republican vice-presidential nominee and Ohio senator JD Vance made a visit. This marks his ninth stop in a string of rallies in Michigan as the Republican presidential campaign focuses on the Midwest. Also in politics: A proposed Ann Arbor law to grant people the right to sit down at work is advancing. City Council voted unanimously Monday night, Oct. 7, to give initial approval to add a “right to sit” section to the city’s non-discrimination ordinance as first proposed in September. |

A 911 call containing the last known recorded contact and a sketch of the man last seen with her were released on Monday, Oct. 7. The description matches the sketch released this week. In Kent County: A judge ordered an evaluation to determine if a man arrested outside a rally for former President Donald Trump can be held responsible for alleged threats he made toward police at the political event. |

Drought expansion explodes over Michigan in the last week |
Drying up: The lack of rain and a month of warm temperatures have made much of Michigan more than just very dry—large areas are now in various levels of drought. The normal rainfall amount for Michigan in August and September is between 6 and 7 inches. Some areas have only had 1 to 2 inches of rain. The details: Most of Lower Michigan is at least abnormally dry. Areas around Alpena, the Mackinaw City area and Frankfort and Manistee are very dry and in moderate drought. All of the Upper Peninsula is at least abnormally dry, with a large area now placed in the severe drought ranking. Lending a helping hand: Michigan restaurants are banding together this week to help support Hurricane Helene relief. Fourteen Grand Rapids area spots will join six restaurants in Northern Michigan in donating all profits Thursday, Oct. 10 to the North Carolina Hospitality Workers Relief Fund and nonprofit Mercy Chefs. |

New forest boardwalk at Tahquamenon Falls will replace aging staircase to viewing area |
Under construction: In an effort to expand accessibility and update aging infrastructure, Tahquamenon Falls State Park is starting construction on a 900-foot-long boardwalk with benches. The new path will take visitors through the Tahquamenon Falls forest before leading them to a spectacular view of the 200-foot-wide Upper Falls. All aboard: Time is running out to catch a Great Lakes cruise this year as the season ends in about a week. Ponant Cruise Lines is the only cruise company still on the Great Lakes and has three ships operating. On the calendar: The Guild of Artists & Artisans is hosting its fourth-annual A2 Artoberfest Fine Art Fair from Saturday, Oct. 12 until Sunday, Oct. 13, in downtown Ann Arbor. The fair will feature around 100 jury-selected artists along with live entertainment, food vendors and art activities. |
