Good afternoon,

Welcome to your twice-weekly look at how generative AI is transforming the way we live, work and play plus the latest news and analysis.

Sam Altman, chief executive of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, has warned people not to expect artificial intelligence to do all the work for them, saying the technology is “far from perfect” and does not offer a shortcut to building great businesses.

Mr Altman made a surprise appearance at Microsoft annual Build developer conference in Seattle early Wednesday morning (Australian time), and offered a glimpse to where AI is headed and gave some advice to entrepreneurs.

Australian tech billionaire Richard White shares a similar view, telling the Australian Shareholders Association on Monday that companies can’t have all their AI eggs in one basket. And that anyone who claims they know what the technology will look like in five years time is lying.

And lastly, can Microsoft at last steal the spotlight back from Apple? The company’s Surface range has had minimal upgrades over the past few years but its latest range can perform on-device AI tasks without the use of the cloud.

Let me know what you think lynchj@theaustralian.com.au
