Salt Lake City might not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of gourmet dining, but Valter Nassi — who passed away earlier this week — helped sculpt a world-class food scene in Utah with his restaurants Il Sovorno, Cucina Toscana and Valter’s Osteria. Writer Meg Walter put it best:

“More Pixar character than human, his shock of white hair, small-framed glasses and tidy sweaters added to his larger-than-life Italian cook persona. Patrons dined at Valter’s for the food, yes, but also for the chance to interact with the gregarious man bouncing from table to table, making recommendations and ensuring all meals met his impeccable standards.”

Opinion: The migrants in Martha’s Vineyard are people, not political fuel

“I came here walking,” said a man named Eliase to a reporter from the Vineyard Gazette. He had walked through 10 countries to get to the United States.

While it is unclear how dozens of Venezuelan immigrants came to Martha’s Vineyard, one of the wealthiest and most liberal communities in Massachusetts, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has taken credit for sending them in order to make a statement on the burdens of immigration on border states. Jay Evansen, however, argues in this opinion that the conversation is less about immigration and has made these people cannon fodder in an unproductive public discourse.
