May is Arthritis Awareness Montha good time to look at what the science says about complementary health approaches for osteoarthritis, a disease that affects more than 32 million U.S. adults.

  • Acupuncture and tai chi may be helpful for osteoarthritis symptoms. A small amount of evidence suggests that massage therapy may also help.
  • Its still uncertain whether glucosamine and chondroitin have a meaningful impact on osteoarthritis symptoms.
  • The evidence on other dietary supplements is too limited for any conclusions to be reached.
