TRIBUTE TO WOLGANG SCHÄUBLE

22/01/2024

A key figure in the peaceful reunification of Germany, Wolfgang Schäuble, former German minister and President of the Bundestag, passed away on 26 December. He was one of the Foundation's friends, and a member of its Board of Trustees, which hosted him on several occasions in Paris. Jean-Dominique Giuliani described him as "the most European of Germans". A national memorial ceremony was paid to him on 22 January in Berlin.

The Foundation has developed a dedicated website to help readers gain a better understanding of the European elections and what is at stake, how the campaign is unfolding in the 27 Member States, as well as the functioning, role and history of the European Parliament.

Les Européens sont appelés aux urnes entre les 6 et 9 juin 2024, selon les pays, pour renouveler les membres du Parlement européen qui seront désormais 720. Pascale Joannin présente un bilan contrasté de la législature qui s'achève, les principaux écueils auxquels les partis politiques en campagne devront faire face et les innovations du scrutin européen. Results of the first round of the presidential election in Finland

29/01/2024

On 28 January, former Prime Minister and National Coalition Party candidate Alexander Stubb and former Foreign Minister and Green Party member Pekka Haavisto came out ahead in the first round of the Finnish presidential election, with 27.21% and 25.8% of the vote respectively. The turnout was 71.53%. They will face each other in a second round of voting on 11 February.

Map of European recovery plans
In response to the economic and social consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the European Union has set up a €672.5 billion recovery fund, known as the "Recovery and Resilience Facility", to be used by Member States in the form of grants and loans. The Foundation offers you an interactive map of the plans, country by country, to see the amounts, timetables and priorities.

Women in Europe
Europe is the continent of women, but progress still has to be made. To illustrate the place of women in European politics, society and the economy, the Foundation has produced a map and three tables showing the number of women in governments, national parliaments and the European Parliament, taking stock of the many elections in 2023.

Franco-German round table on Europe

On 30 January, the Mouvement Européen Paris and the Young Europeans organised a Franco-German round table, moderated by Pascale Joannin, Managing Director of the Foundation. The event focused on the major European projects awaiting France and Germany.
