 | Facing the spectre of 1938 | 17/02/2025 The spectre lurking in Europe is that of the policy of appeasement towards Hitler, which led to the annexation of Czechoslovakia and the outbreak of the Second World War. All other things being equal, Putin is presenting Europe with the same expansionist challenge as the Nazi dictator, whose methods he is scrupulously applying at home. The new American leaders' lack of culture, combined with their over-inflated egos and unbridled populism, has led them to believe that they can negotiate with anyone and anything. | Read the editorial |

 | The Italian Economy and its European Outlook | 24/02/2025 As soon as she came to office on 22 October 2022, Giorgia Meloni promised a major change in politics and Italy's return to a leading role in Europe and on the international stage. According to Edoardo Secchi, in terms of leadership, she has literally crushed all her rivals and opponents with the strength of her convictions and her outspokenness. With her government enjoying the support of the people, she could govern until the end of the legislature and stand for a second term in the next elections, provided that she meets the country's economic and social expectations. | Read the study |

 | The challenges facing European agriculture: Crisis or opportunity for transformation? | 17/02/2025 2024 will be remembered as a pivotal year for European agriculture, faced with major climatic, economic and geopolitical crises. It was also the year of the renewal of the Parliament and the Commission. While the number of farmers in the European Parliament remains relatively stable compared to the previous term, we will have to wait a little longer to judge their real influence. For Herve Pillaud, the new European Commission is keen to pursue ambitious transformations on the razor's edge between competitiveness (the new Brussels mantra) and sustainability, voluntarism and budgetary realism. Will we be able to meet the challenge when instability, particularly in France and Germany, is combined with the rise of populism in many Member States, encouraging them to turn in on themselves and sometimes seeing Europe as nothing more than a necessary evil? | Read the study |

 | European support for the defence industry - Mid-term review of the European Defence Fund | 10/02/2025 Poland has made security one of its top priorities during its Presidency of the Council (January-June 2025). Almost a year ago, the Commission presented a European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) aimed at strengthening European industrial capabilities. If implemented, this programme will bolster the European Defence Fund (EDF), which was set up in 2021 and has financed one hundred and sixty-two armament industry-related programmes. There are numerous and extensive areas of cooperation. The programmes chosen by the Commission bring together an average of seventeen entities, and the Commission takes care to appoint coordinating leaders in almost all the Member States. According to Nicolas-Jean Brehon, questions are now beginning to emerge. Three years on, it is useful to draw up a mid-term review to inform future choices. | Read the study |

 | Greenland: a geostrategic challenge for the European Union in the era Trump 2.0 | 03/02/2025 Donald Trump's return to the White House confirms, after a first term marked by an attempt to buy Greenland, that the Arctic island is a critical geopolitical issue for the United States - and that it should also be for the European Union. In Andre Gattolin's view, the new situation, in which the military threat has been introduced, means that the European Union must rethink its relationship with Greenland and, more broadly, with the North, in a clearly strategic way. | Read the study |

 | Victory for the Christian Democratic Union and a breakthrough for the far right in the German federal elections | 24/02/2025 The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the main opposition party, led by Friedrich Merz, won the snap federal elections in Germany on 23 February. Allied with the Christian Social Union (CSU), led by Bavaria's Minister-President Markus Söder, the party won 28.52% of the vote and took 208 of the 630 seats in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament (+11 compared with the poll on 26 September 2021). The CDU nonetheless obtained a lower result than predicted by opinion polls, which had predicted a 30% share of the vote. | Read the study |
