European Union: Stability and Novelty

21/07/2024

Ursula von der Leyen's re-election as President of the European Commission reflects the high degree of political stability in the Union as a whole. The surge of the far right, which has resulted in an increase in the number of political groups in Parliament - there are now 8 - has not upset the parliamentary majority, and its candidate has increased her score compared to 2019. National protests have helped to strengthen criticism, but do not challenge the Union's policies or the central majority that runs its institutions. Can we speak of continuity though?

In Praise of Coalitions

10/07/2024

If there's one lesson that national politics in Europe offer democracies, it's the relevance of coalitions. In fact, in the European Union, only Greece and Malta, and so far France, have no multi-party governments. In all other legislative elections, the results have been fragmented, making alliances - sometimes unexpected - essential for stable government in the general interest.

According to Thaima Samman and Benjamin de Vanssay, the main aim of this law is to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence in areas where its application may pose risks to the protection of fundamental rights.

A "Commissioner responsible for Defence Issues" (Institutional reforms and reflections based on the EDC Treaty)

08/07/2024

The question of European defence is more pertinent than ever: current crises and conflicts on the borders of the European Union pose geostrategic challenges that are not, however, new. To a certain extent, the EDC Treaty of 1952 attempted to respond to these challenges. At a time when we are (re)inventing the Europe of Defence, a re-interpretation of this text is in order, according to Luigi Gianniti.

European agriculture and Ukrainian agriculture complement each other

01/07/2024

With the opening of negotiations for Ukraine's accession to the European Union, the prospect of an agricultural powerhouse joining the single market may give rise to fears of new competition between member states. However, for Jean-Jacques Hervé, when it comes to global competition - and with Russia in particular - Ukrainian agricultural production is, in the author's view, an asset to be taken seriously.

General Elections in France: an Assembly without a majority

07/07/2024

The 2nd round of legislative elections on July 7 came as a big surprise and a clear relief to many: the radical right-wing Rassemblement National (RN) party, chaired by Jordan Bardella, was largely outstripped by the left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP), as well as by the presidential majority coalition, Ensemble. No party won an absolute majority. This is a situation unprecedented in France on this scale, and so common in Europe.
