Georgia: a terrible dilemma for Europe

At the end of the year, the Member States of the European Union must decide whether or not to grant Georgia the status of candidate country. If Georgia is granted candidate status, it will reward and strengthen a government that has every reason to believe it will continue its policy of breaking with the West. To refuse it would be to risk arousing popular anger with serious consequences. Régis Genté points out that the country has not yet fulfilled the 12 priorities set by the European Union.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis' New Democracy wins Greek general election

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' party, New Democracy, came out well ahead in the Greek parliamentary elections held on 25 June, with 40.5% of the vote. It edged out Syriza (radical left), which obtained just 17.8%. Six other parties are represented in the Vouli, the single chamber of parliament, including three from the far right. With 158 of the 300 seats in the Vouli, New Democracy therefore has an absolute majority.

Edgars Rinkevics is elected President of the Republic of Latvia

On 31 May, the 100 deputies of the Saeima, the single chamber of Parliament, elected Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics as President of the Republic of Latvia by 52 votes in the 3rd ballot. The 49-year-old will officially begin his four-year term on 8 July. He succeeds Egils Levits, who chose not to stand for re-election.
