Dear John,
As 2021 comes to a close, we’ve been inviting you to consider the impact KQED has on our region: past, present and future. But today, I want to talk about how important you are to this community. Local, independent news is essential to a thriving democracy. And support from listeners, viewers and readers like you is critical to keeping local, independent news on the air.
Half of the daily newspaper circulation nationwide is owned by hedge funds and controlled by corporate interests. Local journalism is in jeopardy because outside influences are buying your attention, one media source at a time.
To be quite candid with you, as we weather another year amid a pandemic, I’m concerned about our budget. It costs $54,900 per day to produce our award-winning reports and programming. So I’m turning to you, John, asking you to please give your most generous gift today.
We all know that KQED and public media dare to challenge the status quo. We dig deep to discover what’s truly broken, and our reporting is available to everyone so our community can be informed and unearth innovative solutions. Since public media isn’t bound by shareholders, it gives us the opportunity to truly change lives.
Take, for example, KQED’s reporting on the housing shortage in California. Throughout 2021 we told stories that helped you understand the roots of the problem and shed new light on the affordable housing crisis. And as a direct result of our reporting, the State of California enacted meaningful legislation to address the problem. There is now a half billion dollar program to support renters whose homes are in foreclosure.
KQED set the forces in motion. Now, families across the state have the resources to buy their homes. That’s the power of public media.
I’m proud of our reporters and this accomplishment! I’m proud you count on us, day in and day out, to provide reliable information and quality entertainment. We’re here for you – from Morning Edition to Fresh Air; PBS NewsHour to Downton Abbey. Please give today, so we can continue to serve Northern California.
We rely on you, and that’s our biggest strength.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Michael Isip President and CEO
