Can an Electric G-Wagen Match the Icon? We Went Way Off-Road to Find Out.

It had to happen. The Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen, the G-Class, that utilitarian-yet-posh outlier that has somehow retained its essence despite 45 years of gentle evolution, is now finally electrified.

Our correspondent's first drive of the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology took him to the south of France to the remote stretches of the Narbonne region. The G-Class has been developed in this area for years, along with testing in Austria, Germany, Spain and Sweden. Mercedes-Benz didn’t play it safe when plotting the course for his test route: the trail the trail would cover steep, jagged, uneven terrain with no shortage of sharp rocks and slick surfaces. He heard about journalists getting tire punctures on earlier waves, bolstering the impression that this wouldn’t be a sanitized or overly curated off-road experience. Game on.

The Best New Canned Cocktails for Summer

If there’s one thing fueling the drinks industry right now, it’s ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails. In the most recent economic report by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, RTDs show a whopping year-to-year growth in both sales (+26.8%) and volume (+24.3%).

“Hey, nerd, enough with the math. I just want something easy to drink,” you’re saying. In that spirit, no pun intended, we asked the InsideHook staff to wade through the literally dozens of new canned/RTD brands and flavors crowding our office and come up with a few recent releases that are worthy of your summer cooler.

Don’t see what you want? We’ve offered numerous suggestions in the past (see here, here and here), and those not-so-new releases are certainly worth a sip or three.

Yesterday, we asked you which rare whiskey bottle release you were most excited about. Here are the results:

  • Around 12% of you are itching for Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged.
  • About 14% of you are eagerly awaiting Jack Daniel’s Limited Edition Single Barrel.
  • Almost 32% of you are ready for Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection.
  • The rest of you, a whopping 42%, are needing the Pappy and Old Rip Van Winkle release ASAP.

“Furiosa” Kicks Off a Cannes Full of Big Swings

This is the first installment of the 2024 edition of the French Dispatches, our on-the-ground coverage of the Cannes Film Festival.

“Do you have it in you to make it epic?”

So asks Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) at a pivotal moment in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which just premiered here at Cannes; it’s been the question on everybody’s mind here on the Riviera, about George Miller’s film and in general.

The 7 Best Electric Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes are just plain hard to beat in terms of effectiveness, and now, design, tech and sustainability. But not all are created equal. Some oscillate in the same tried and true way since their inception, while some use a roundabout motion. Some come with all the tech and app bells and whistles, while others focus on aesthetics. However, all are worth the investment. Here are seven of our selects.

It’s Time to Remember the Team the Yankees Want to Forget

For the Yankees, a ballclub that went 141-182 during the two years Deion Sanders was a member of the Bronx Bombers, the ’90 campaign was particularly painful, as that season was messy both on the field and off with team owner George Steinbrenner suspended by the league for his actions toward star player Dave Winfield, outfielder Mel Hall (who is now in prison) openly dating an underage high school girl, and righty pitcher Andy Hawkins tossing a complete game no-hitter — and somehow losing to the White Sox 4-0.

Steinbrenner, Winfield, Hawkins and Hall, as well as as well as the latter’s victim, are all featured in the new three-part docuseries Bronx Zoo ‘90: Crime, Chaos and Baseball, which is now available to stream on Peacock. Director DJ Caruso, a lifelong Mets fan from Connecticut, based the show on a series of articles from New York Post columnist Joel Sherman he read during the pandemic. We spoke to Caruso about the project and how it came to fruition.
