There were a lot of books published this decade. These are the ones we’ll never forget. For Your Reading List Ordinary Girls by Jaquira Diaz
This memoir is one of strength, perseverance and hope. Diaz, who grew up moving between Puerto Rico and Miami Beach, the oldest girl born to a mother with schizophrenia and a father who favored her older brother, movingly documents what her early, difficult life was like. Diaz doesn’t let these circumstances define her though. She finds that her friends — other ordinary girls and books — are the two things that help her survive. It’s a book that makes me want to learn more about her today, setting the stage for a great sequel. Get your copy now. —Olivia Taylor More From BuzzFeed Note: There will be no newsletter next week.
