Where NOLA Eats

Welcome back, New Orleans food fans! It's Carnival time, and that means it's king cake time. This week, Ian McNulty pulls his list of top king cakes from 2024.  Hubig's Pies has jumped into the king cake business: We had to give their cakes a try.  We look back on the most uplifting food stories from 2024, and the people behind them. King Cake Hub is back with dozens of options, all under one roof. As the city copes with the aftermath of the fatal New Year's Day attack on Bourbon Street, restaurants on the strip are raising money to aid survivors. Finally, we rounded up tried and true recipes for making your own king cake at home.

1. The best of the best.

The dawn of a new Carnival season in New Orleans signals both a fresh start and a return to traditions, and that plays out in the perennial king cake obsession too. Ian McNulty looks back on the king cakes he loved best in 2024.

2. A bigger slice of the pie?

Hubig’s Pies always have a throwback comfort food appeal, and that’s a common thread shared with the brand’s new king cakes. Fans of the old school McKenzie's template will feel at home with this one.

3. Wait, there's more!

Ian shared his favorite food stories of the past year, and the people behind them. King Cake Hub is back at Zony Mash Beer Project, 3940 Thalia St., with 100+ sugary pastries to sample. And restaurants and bars along Bourbon Street are taking part in a campaign to aid the New Year’s Day Tragedy Fund.

4. DIY tradition.

Whether a bakery selling king cake is too far away or you just enjoy a challenge, we have recipes to make your own at home. Try brioche, a cinnamon roll shortcut or a very fancy French-style galette des rois with these recipes.

That's it for the newsletter, but in New Orleans, the food news never stops. Get the inside info every day at Where NOLA Eats.
