Outburst of violence spurs increase in Baton Rouge police presence

“People in this community shouldn’t have to fear gunshots in and out, day and night,” Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome said Friday at a news conference called to address three gun deaths in the city since Monday.

Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said his department is organizing a “special unit” that will work with existing patrols to “increase proactive policing” going into the weekend.

East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools is looking for a new permanent superintendent after the departure of Sito Narcisse. The timing of when that search will begin remains in flux.

The board is considering a proposal that would call for development of a new strategic vision for the school system before it advertises the opening.

The board has a little over five months to find a new superintendent.
