Congress approved a six-month delay in overtime rule implementation Wednesday, deferring legislation that would have gone into effect on Dec. 1. President Barack Obama has said he will veto any delay in raising the cutoff for overtime pay from $23,660 to $47,476.

The Labor Department lawsuit accusing Palantir Technologies of discrimination against Asians in its hiring highlights a shortcoming of the referral strategy many tech firms use for recruiting. Some companies are tweaking their referral programs to add incentives for the referral of job candidates who would increase diversity.

AT&T is training its existing workforce in new technologies instead of focusing on recruiting experienced outside talent. "The thinking is that if you are materially doing the same job for more than 3 to 5 years, it suggests that you may not be growing, building new competencies, expanding networks, etc.," says Cathy Benko of Deloitte.

Calif. creating state-run retirement plan
California Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign legislation to create a state-run retirement plan for nearly 7 million private workers who don't have an employer-sponsored plan. The law will require employers to enroll employees and deduct money from their checks, although the employees can opt out.
