Acadia traffic down only 10 percent in August as tourism picked up from a slow spring

  • It’s another data point showing that a Maine tourist season that got off to a slow start in the spring, when the state was largely shut down to out-of-state visitors, picked up speed as the summer continued.
Maj. Gen. Nelson Durgin, former Bangor City Council chair, dies at 83
  • Durgin served two terms on the Bangor City Council, including two years as the council's chair, after he retired from a long career in the military and as the director of an assisted living facility in Bangor.

Feds to appeal dismissal of blood-alcohol evidence in Acadia manslaughter case
  • A federal judge ruled last month that the results of a blood test showing Praneeth Manubolu had an elevated level of alcohol in his blood were inadmissible because police didn't obtain a warrant before requiring him to provide a blood sample. Manubolu is accused of killing his three passengers in a crash in Acadia National Park a year ago that is the deadliest incident in the park's history.

How fishermen and lobstermen can apply for federal aid to offset tariff losses

  • The program, called the Seafood Trade Relief Program, provides cash relief to commercial fishermen. It is built on an earlier trade relief program which provided aid to farmers hurt by tariffs. Applications for the program opened Monday — here are the details on who is eligible and how to apply.

Maine racial equity panel recommends changes to criminal justice, education systems
  • The Permanent Commission on the State of Racial, Indigenous and Maine Tribal Populations has been working for weeks to boil down more than 400 bills left in limbo from the coronavirus-shortened 2020 session after sustained protests against police brutality and the coronavirus pandemic highlighted the disparities faced by Black people and people of color.

  • A new ad from Sara Gideon’s campaign cites two bipartisan actions — one of them a unanimous vote — that predated her marriage and had broad effects on all government contractors, not just one.
