Images carry as much weight as the loudest speeches. Quite often, they even help to legitimize certain behaviors. For the different generations of the 21st century, Africa has always been represented as a subcontinent. Those who live there are dehumanized, reduced to poor children covered in flies or, at best, worn as trophets, glorifying the examples of those who find success once they arrive (and are accepted) in the West. But this mechanism of pity, of the single narrative, often even of demonization, tirelessly produces a distortion of reality. There's something to never be the norm in a world where that term seems empty of meaning. What's more, this frustration can only be reinforced when we are dispossessed of one's own narrative.
But therein lies Thandiwe Muriu's strength. An atypical career path, breaking with the norms of her country and the expectations of a "great artistic career", while recounting the beauty of her reality. You thought you could throw me away presents the elements that make the artist's work so iconic. Her work encourages viewers to take a fresh look at the concepts of identity and free expression, exploring what it means to be a strong, modern woman. By drawing on her own experience, the Kenyan artist is ultimately addressing women the world over. Indeed, if there's one subject common to all the demands, expectations, criticisms and stolen speeches, it's Woman. In just 3 years, the young photographer has established a vibrant identity that cannot be ignored, joining the ranks of those who are helping to reclaim the African narrative and its image. | | |

The first exhibition of the project explores the reasons that led to the creation of the first images representing a male body in the history of photography. In the 19th century, artists rarely signed their work on the subject, so the gallery opted for a thematic approach in inventorying and classifying original prints, which allowed the identification of academicism, eroticism, pornography, sports, and finally, science as domains that contributed to the emergence of male representations.
The study of the model becomes central in the analysis of the image; their position, attitude, and environment help determine, along with the study of the paper, a theme and a period. It becomes a concept, the archetype model, which applies to each encountered theme: the academic, erotic, pornographic, sports, and scientific models. They are not mere alibis but, on the contrary, they are the objective and often commercial reasons for the production of male images until the turn of the 20th century, before the emergence of creative artists.
The exhibition presents three of the main themes encountered during this period and highlights the thematic and chronological transition from one type of model to another. Establishing a first connection between academic, erotic, and pornographic models covers a wide spectrum of creations on the male body and allows us to envision a logic and evolution (with exhibition #2 on the sports model) that accommodates most of the images encountered during this period. | | |

Tue-Sat 11-19:00 | | | | | | | | | | | | | At the first sight of this devastated landscape, a kind of denial sets in, characterized by visual compensation, a reassuring retinal persistence replacing black with green. A mental weave that fades to reveal the real.
It's time to take the measure of things, to gather a tangible trace through body-to-body contact. Morvarid K collects the charred imprints of charred tree trunks, wrapping them in photographic prints made in situ. The silent voice of the trees mingles with her photographic writing. These impressions are materialized by the transition from a monochrome risograph (strong contrast between green and black) to a color print on Kuzo paper (which softens the features and camouflages the black), thus underlining the beginning of the subject's slide into oblivion. An installation of charcoal from various burnt forests completes the picture.
Finally comes the time of the subject's trivialization, illustrated by the use of photographic fragments with burnt outlines, representing the bark of living trees. In this body of work, this dense mass heralds and denounces the intensification of fires. The burnt contours and gradual disappearance of the image in favor of an empty, white space underline the destruction of the forests, as well as the fading of the subject in our minds.
In Morvarid K's work, the print becomes a material, a stage in the creative process, before the gesture or performative experience completes the work. As a visual artist and performer, Morvarid K attempts to desacralize the print, not hesitating to cover her prints almost entirely with small pen strokes. Paradoxically, photographic paper is sublimated, and the physical act of printing, traditionally dedicated to the darkroom, is deported or extended beyond its walls.
A gorgeous book, published by the(M) éditions, accompanies the exhibition. It is printed in an edition of 200 copies, all unique, with each of the book's covers designed by the artist with an original print fragment.

This exhibition will shed light on Viviane Sassen’s creative process by focusing on two main themes: the incessant search for new photographic forms and the importance of intimacy in her work. For Sassen, photography is more than a mere surface: it is an opening onto a place where her dreams, desires and fears co-exist with the world in all its tangible reality.
Initially studying fashion design, Viviane Sassen quickly turned to photography, pursuing her education at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). After completing her studies, she alternated between personal projects and commercial work. Her photographic style – with its saturated colours, interplay of light and shadow and unique portrayals of the human body – was soon in great demand. Viviane Sassen rapidly gained worldwide recognition, both in the fashion industry and in the cultural world.

Pour Sorbonne Artgallery, Véronique Ellena propose une vision inédite du Vitrail du Millénaire de la Cathédrale de Strasbourg qu’elle a créé en 2015, suite à l’obtention d’une commande de la Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles. Cette œuvre a été réalisée avec Zabou Carrière pour le design graphique, et en étroite collaboration avec le maître-verrier Pierre-Alain Parot, qui nous a quittés cette année.
Dans “Le ciel, la terre, et tout ce qu’ils renferment”, l’artiste rend hommage au maître-verrier et à son atelier, tout en proposant des photographies en dialogue avec l’architecture de la Galerie Soufflot.
Transformant les vitrines de Sorbonne Artgallery en autant de détails extraits de l’œuvre originale et en écho avec les médaillons de mosaïque qui les surplombent, Véronique Ellena propose une mise en abyme de la représentation où la photographie sur vitrail redevient elle-même photographie. | | |

Tue-Sat 12-19:00 | | | | | | | | | | | | | For over thirty years, Terri Weifenbach has built a dense photographic opus that studies different aspects of the natural world - gardens, insects, flowers, clouds, water, birds, forests - and their unobtrusive, daily interactions with humans. Rather than seek overt signs of a dramatically changed landscape, Weifenbach has always been drawn to quieter subjects and, through her more than 20 publications and 50 exhibitions organized in the US, Japan and Europe, Weifenbach has developed a precise and lyrical signature, often recognizable by her mastery of the bokeh or sfumato play of blur and sharp within an image.
Without a specific geographical identity, Terri Weifenbach's photographs presented at Galerie Miranda recount a collective space, of land and sky, sun and clouds, but also cities and town gardens. Her underlying philosophy is inspired by the great English historian Simon Schama, whose landmark book Landscape and Memory (1995) explored the myths, memories, and obsessions that underlie the Western world's interaction with nature. Like Schama, Terri Weifenbach is not an activist but a messenger, informing us and sharing her reverence for the natural world; reminding us of the great beauty that is in danger and that we must strive to preserve.
Born in 1957 in New York, Terri Weifenbach lived in New Mexico and California before settling in Washington DC. She now lives in Paris. Her immersive approach characterizes a work that is mainly interested in nature and our perception of it.
The creation and design of books holds a major place in her photographic practice. Since the publication in 1997 of her first book In Your Dreams, she has designed twenty others including, among these recent publications, Between Maple and Chestnut and Gift, co-signed with the Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi. In 2019, she published in the Des Oiseaux collection, followed by Cloud Physics (2021) and the commissioned Giverny, une année au jardin (2022) all published by Atelier EXB.
Her work is regularly presented in museums and international institutions in the United States, Europe and Japan as well as in various collections such as the Center for Creative Photography (Arizona), the Sprengel Museum (Hanover, Germany) and the Hermès Collection in Paris. Terri Weifenbach received the Guggenheim Prize in 2015. | | |

Roger Ballen was born in New York in 1950, but has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa since 1982. After working in mineral exploration, he took his camera to dig into the layers of his own inner life and pierce the external surface of a poor and deeply rural country.
With the Dorps series (small dormitory towns) which he begun in 1983 in a sun-scorched landscape, the doors and shutters of cafés are closed, the buildings of Victorian Cape architecture inanimate and the images are frontal. But when he decided to enter homes directly and confront stained surfaces, saturated with lines, marks, photos and children's drawings, the interior wall became an essential element in his work. It's not a background, but rather a surface, like a picture plane. Between 1986 and 1994, Roger Ballen also took an interest in marginalized population. "They may well become another fragment of human detritus of the new South Africa," he writes in the preface to Platteland, the first impactful book among his singular bibliography. In 2001, Outland introduced the "wire" period. Roger Ballen draws with wires, linking the formal elements of the image with straight lines and curves.
With Shadow Chamber in 2005 and Boarding House in 2009, Ballen's visual experiments continually blur the boundaries between reality and fiction. Stories are told in closed worlds, where humans and animals cohabit, and jostle our gaze. Both mysterious and explicit, Ballen's works strive to be revealing moments that allow the visitor to grasp what remains inexplicable. Roger Ballen likes to describe his works as "existential psychodramas” which attempt to free suppressed thoughts and feelings through the themes of marginality, uncanniness, universal archetypes of the psyche and experiences of alterity. Both dense and austere, his 'ballenesque' aesthetic – as he calls it, the better to own it – places his work in the vein of fine arts photography whose codes he continues to disrupt. | | |

Sat 9-14:00 | | | | | | | | | | | | | As part of the exhibition series "La jeune photographie allemande", this year, students of Ute Mahler and Marit Herrmann of the Ostkreuzschule Berlin are showing photographic works that address forms of togetherness and tackle the question of what connects people today. The exhibition entitled "With Each Other" will open at the Goethe-Institut Paris on 9 November 2023 at 6:30 p.m., during the international photography fair PARIS PHOTO. The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation organises the exhibition series annually in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Paris.
The exhibition comprises photographic positions exploring the tension between community and coexistence. Personal, often biographical works are set against series which provide insights into the longing for new environments and ways of life. Others address the boundaries and challenges of a divided everyday life through themes such as gender and migration.
In their works, the artists supervised by Ute Mahler and Marit Herrmann pick up fundamental phenomena that determine coexistence, such as statelessness, social role models or environmental changes. How does it affect people to live at the foot of an active volcano which could erupt at any time, or how does a couple live together on an otherwise uninhabited island? The photographic images also highlight personal themes such as one’s own adoption experience, transgenerational trauma and the disappearance of jobs and structures due to industrialisation. The wide-ranging aspects of togetherness bear witness to commonalities, basic needs and our concepts of "With Each Other" in all possible forms.
With the exhibition series "La jeune photographie allemande", the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and the Goethe-Institut Paris have been promoting young photographers at German universities since 2018, showing current trends in photography. Each year, students from a selected university or academy are invited to present their work in an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Paris. After a presentation by Martin Liebscher’s photography class at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach (HfG) in 2018 and one by Heidi Specker’s Master’s students at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) in 2019, Adam Broomberg’s and Oliver Chanarin’s photography class at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK) in 2021 and Beate Gütschow’s photography class at Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne in 2022 followed.

Inspired by the world of the famous writer, the artist from the Düsseldorf school has delved into his archives of the Loire riverbank landscapes to illustrate the settings of Balzac's novel "Le Lys dans la vallée".
Photo Days invite Elger Esser à se plonger dans l’œuvre de Balzac.
Les références littéraires sont en effet nombreuses dans l’œuvre de l’artiste Franco-Allemand, issu de ce que l’on appelle communément « l’école de Düsseldorf ». Entre 1998 et 2005, Elger Esser a beaucoup photographié les berges de la Loire, et notamment les moulins de l’Indre. À notre demande, il s’est donc replongé dans ses archives, pour y chercher la trace de celui décrit précisément par Balzac dans Le Lys dans la vallée.
Dès 2016, avec son projet sur Combray, Elger Esser avait été l'un des premiers artistes à rétablir l’usage de l'ancienne technique de l'héliogravure dans l'art photographique contemporain. Depuis, la plaque de cuivre est devenue une composante essentielle de l’œuvre, puisque l’artiste imprime maintenant directement dessus, renouant ainsi avec les origines mêmes du médium photographique (rappelons que Nièpce utilisa pour sa première photographie une plaque de cuivre argentée enduite de goudron).
Mais les modèles artistiques d’Elger Esser remontent à la fin du XVIè siècle, avec les peintures à l'huile sur cuivre argenté d’Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610), qui réalisa le premier ciel nocturne fidèle à la réalité à partir de ses observations de la voûte céleste au télescope (La Fuite d’Egypte, 1610, conservée à la Pinakotheck de Münich).
Dans ce projet présenté ici pour la première fois, Elger Esser se réfère donc directement au travail d'Adam Elsheimer, puisqu’il capture la photographie directement sur ce support de manière similaire. Mais son inspiration est décelable jusque dans son esthétique, avec, par exemple, l’intérêt qu’il porte aux reflets dans l’eau.
Il faut en outre relever que seuls les progrès techniques ont rendu une telle série d’œuvres possible : depuis 2016, la galvanoplastie sur plaque de cuivre et les impressions à jets d'encre sèche sont désormais réalisables. Complétant ces nouvelles techniques par l’emploi de l'intelligence artificielle, Elger Esser crée, à partir de ses images anciennes, des variations poétiques et picturales fidèles à l'abstraction du langage littéraire, alliant ainsi savamment tradition et modernité. | | |

Mon-Fri 8-20:00 | | | | | | | | | | | | | Après avoir photographié des zones de conflits et voyagé dans de nombreux pays, Sophie Hatier s’éloigne du reportage et se concentre sur une approche plus plasticienne et sensorielle du paysage, du portrait et du vivant en général. Artiste amoureuse de la couleur, ses images sondent la limite entre le concret et l’abstrait, le point de bascule entre la photographie et la peinture.
Depuis 2016, elle poursuit une série intitulée Loin des jardins qui explore des régions en France et à l’étranger, où la nature sauvage, puissante, résiste et impose sa temporalité.
Sophie Hatier est la première artiste invitée en résidence au Château Jean Faure, partenaire de Photo Days.
Habituée aux grands espaces et aux régions très peu peuplées, cette résidence au sein d’un domaine viticole de dix-huit hectares au relief plat s’avère pour l’artiste un véritable défi photographique. Forte de sa rencontre avec l’équipe jeune et passionnée qui travaille avec minutie sur la vigne et sa transformation, Sophie Hatier arpente les lieux à toute heure et par tous les temps, afin de développer sa compréhension de l’espace. Elle installe au bord des vignes un petit studio photo utilisant la lumière naturelle pour s’emparer des tonalités émouvantes de jeunes verts, de gris délicats et de cyans joyeux du domaine, et mettre en lumière son équipe, ses raisins, suivant le rythme des saisons.
Cette exposition présente une partie de cette résidence parallèlement à un choix d’images inédites de la série Loin des Jardins (Camargue, Islande) dont certaines ont été réalisées cet été (Norvège). | | |

Rinko Kawauchi (née en 1972) est réputée pour la douceur et la luminosité de ses photographies couleurs qui révèlent, depuis ses premières œuvres, le mystère, l'éclat, la fragilité et la force de la vie sous toutes ses formes. Son regard se pose aussi bien sur les êtres délicats de son environnement immédiat, qu'il s'agisse de la flore, de la faune ou des membres de sa famille, que sur les grandes forces de la nature que constituent les volcans et les glaciers formés au cours de longues périodes temporelles. La sensibilité unique de sa photographie révèle les liens entre ces sujets, qui brillent tous d'un même éclat vital.

2022 winner of the Photo Days | | | | | | | 24h by appointment | | | | | | | | | | | | | During the 2022 portfolio readings, Italian photographer Costanza Gastaldi has won an artistic residency in Brazil, a collaboration between Photo Days, the Iandé collective and the Paranapiacaba Festival. Her images speak of a distant, colonial past, of the legends that have come down to us today, and of the future stakes involved in preserving the Mata Atlantica and its eco-system.
En 2022, Costanza Gastaldi est à New York City, invitée par la Fondation Penumbra à exposer ses œuvres parmi celles de maîtres comme Robert Mapplethorpe, Berenice Abbott, Alfred Stieglitz, lorsqu’elle apprend que son portfolio est pré sélectionné par Photo Days pour une résidence au Brésil. En quelques jours elle argumente et répond au dossier final de candidature. Le 23 décembre 2022 la nouvelle tombe comme un cadeau : elle est la lauréate du prestigieux prix et gagne la résidence au Brésil. +33 (0)1 40 76 84 16 | | | | | | | | | | | | | Christie’s Photographs Department in Paris is pleased to announce their fall Photographies sale, an online auction open for bidding from 26 October - 9 November.
The auction will present 153 photographs by major artists of the 20th and 21st Century’s, such as Peter Beard, Constantin Brancusi, William Klein, Robert Mapplethorpe, Man Ray, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Irving Penn alongside Contemporary practitioners like Wolfgang Tillmans, Shirin Neshat, Anne Collier, Prince Gyasi, Sarfo Emmanuel Annor, Reine Paradis and Viviane Sassen.
The first section of the sale, Lothar Schirmer’s Glamour Collection (lots 1-82), is dedicated to the famed Art Publisher.
After publishing more than 1,500 books dedicated to Art and Photography (including 386 editions still available), Lothar Schirmer needs no introduction. Behind the name is a founder infusing the famous publishing house with boundless life and passion. The common thread in his collection – assembled with passion over the last fifty years – is Glamour. Divided into three categories: celebrity portraits, erotic nudes, and fashion advertisements, featuring famous photographers such as Helmut Newton, Cindy Sherman, Peter Lindbergh, Anton Corbijn, Dominique Isserman, Patrick Demarchelier, Jeanloup Sieff, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Steven Klein and Nick Knight.

Photo Days presents an exhibition of Elger Esser in the Rotonde Balzac, opened for the occasion. Inspired by the world of the famous writer, the artist from the Düsseldorf school has delved into his archives of the Loire riverbank landscapes to illustrate the settings of Balzac's novel "Le Lys dans la vallée".

Join Antoine d'Agata and Raymond Depardon as they discuss their latest books with Philippe Séclier who will be moderating. Both d'Agata's latest book Un Endroit Inconvénient: En Ukraine and Depardon's Septembre au Chili 1971/1973 discuss crucial moments in the history of two countries. Please note that this In Conversation session will be held in French. After the talk there will be a book signing. Both books, as well as other titles by the two photographers, will be available to purchase at the event.
12:45 Film Screening with Harry Gruyaert
At 12:45 Harry Gruyaert will be presenting his film, Sense of a Place, to introduce his latest book Morocco, co-published by Textuel and Thames & Hudson. The screening will be followed by a book signing. Copies of Morocco will be available, as well as many of Gruyaert's other publications such as Last Call and Rivages.
14:00 Traces: A Presentation by Stuart Franklin
At 14:00, Stuart Franklin will be introducing Traces, published by Dewi Lewis, making its debut at this year's Paris Photo. Traces is the last in a series of books by Franklin, following on from Narcissus and Analogies. His latest book focuses on trees and how their presence (or absence) is intrinsically linked to human history and intervention. After the presentation, copies of all three books from the series will be available to be signed.
15:00 In Conversation: William Keo and Yegan Mazandarani
Join William Keo as he discusses his new book Offside with Yegan Mazandarani, the editor of his publisher Four Eyes Editions. Offside, Keo's first monograph, focuses on the fans of a local football competition in his hometown Aulnay-Sous-Bois. Keo uses the matches to explore the place of immigrants in French society. This talk will be followed by a book signing. This will be one of the first opportunities to purchase Offside in person.
15:50 Les Italiens: A Presentation by Caroline Barbey
Caroline Barbey will be presenting the most recent publication of Bruno Barbey's work, Les Italiens, published by Delpire & Co last year. The series, shot early in Barbey's career, is the very work that helped the photographer join Magnum in 1964. The talk will begin at 15:50 and books will be available to purchase following the presentation.
16:20 What's Ours: A Presentation by Myriam Boulos
Join Myriam Boulos as she introduces her first monograph What's Ours, published by Aperture, released on the occasion of Paris Photo 2023. What's Ours casts an unflinching eye on the revolution that began in Lebanon in 2019 with protests against austerity and government corruption. Boulos renders the body in public space as a powerful motif, both visceral and vulnerable in the face of state neglect and violence. After her presentation, Boulos will be signing copies of the book. This will be one of the first opportunities to view What's Ours.
16:50 Men Untitled: A Presentation by Carolyn Drake
Carolyn Drake will present her latest book Men Untitled, published by TBW Books last month. This new series explores Drake's relationship to myths of masculinity in American culture. Mixing symbols of virility, self-portraits, and photographs of men "laid bare," Men Untitled functions as both introspection and documentary. Copies will be available to be signed by Drake after the presentation.
17:15 Devotion: A Presentation by Steve McCurry
Steve McCurry will present his latest photobook Devotion, published by Prestel this November. Devotion features images spanning McCurry's forty-year career. The selection of images focus on human spirituality, exploring devotion, loyalty, faithfulness, and dedication in the midst of everyday life. Copies of Devotion, as well as McCurry's previous publications and a selection of posters, will be available to be signed after the presentation.
17:45 Selected Writings: A Presentation by Richard Kalvar
Join Richard Kalvar as he presents Selected Writings, published by Damiani this Autumn. The book features photographs of public writing from locations in a number of countries, taken over more than 50 years. The images are surprising, and often downright funny, focussing on writing in all its forms - graffiti, signs, tee shirts and even gravestones. After Kalvar introduces the work he will be available to sign copies of Selected Writings and Photopoche/Photofile. | | |
