Amy Presley Leaves Planning Board on July 21 after Serving Two Consecutive Terms

The Montgomery County Planning Board is changing one of its members after the Board concludes its meeting on Thursday, July 21. That session will be the last attended by Amy Presley, who is leaving the Board after serving two consecutive terms, from 2008 to 2016, which means she is ineligible for reappointment.

"It has been a great honor to serve as a member of the Montgomery County Planning Board for eight years and to play a role in so many positive County-changing and community-enhancing plans and policies," says Presley. "My service on the Board has been a highlight in my professional life. I have been privileged to experience the passion, dedication, camaraderie and 'family' of the M-NCPPC." Learn more here.

Cyclists To Visit White Flint 2, Rock Spring, and Grosvenor-Strathmore Planning Areas

Montgomery County Planning Board Chair Casey Anderson will join staff from the County Planning Department and Department of Parks on a bicycle tour of the communities that are the subject of current Sector Plans.

Departing on Friday, July 29, at 10 a.m., the tour will travel mostly on low volume streets to visit the White Flint 2, Rock Spring, and Grosvenor-Strathmore sector plan areas. Sector Plans for these communities are currently underway and the bike tour will highlight those areas now under consideration for improvements. Learn more here.
2017 PROS Plan Update

Tell us what's #trending in parks! We need your help with the 2017 Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan Update to predict future needs and determine how to put the right parks in the right places, and steward our natural and cultural resources. New Giant Chess Game at Germantown Town Center Urban Park

Checkmate! Play giant (we're talking life-sized!) chess set at Germantown Town Center Urban Park and enjoy fun, sun and new friendships to boot. Capture your opponent's king while having fun playing a popular and challenging game all while exploring the outdoors. The giant chess set is available to sign out at the Germantown Library. Game on! 
Woodlawn Visitor Center Now Open

Make plans to visit and explore the county's newest historical exhibit that echoes the past and tells the story of a bustling farm, its community, and those who made a bold bid for freedom on the Underground Railroad. The Woodlawn Visitor Center, is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm through November. The trail and grounds are open year-round, sunrise to sunset. Click here for more info. 
Community Meeting On Park Activity Building Lease Renewal

Montgomery Parks will host a community meeting on August 10, at 7 p.m. to discuss the current lease renewal for the Lynnbrook Local Park Activity Building. The public is invited to learn more and provide input on the current use of the Lynbrook Park Activity Building. Click here for further information.
Olney Manor Recreational Park South Entrance Closure Postponed 

The plan to permanently gate and close public vehicle access through the south entrance at Batchellors Forest Road into Olney Manor Recreational Park has been postponed until a community meeting is held to allow the review and public comment on the plan. Click here for additional information.
Community Meeting Scheduled to Review Renovation Plan for Dewey Local Park 

Montgomery Parks hosted a Community Meeting to review the renovation plans for a new playground for Dewey Local Park. Park staff also sought input on ideas of the renovation and reuse of the existing hard surface courts. For more info, click here.
We're getting a face-lift!

The Meadowside Nature Center - Raptor Walkway Exhibit is under renovation to increase accessibility for all of our visitors. Work will continue through the summer and the exhibit will remain closed until construction is complete. The Enrichment and Lunchtime Talks for the raptors will be on hiatus until the Walkway re-opens. For additional information on the work scheduled, click here.

Brookside Gardens is happy to announce the return of its premier Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly and Caterpillar Exhibit. The seasonal display features hundreds of live butterflies from all over the world. Families, students, nature lovers, and everyone in between can get an up close experience of these brilliant butterflies from North America, Costa Rica, Africa and Asia as they soar among colorful flowers. Visitors can learn about their amazing metamorphosis, the important role butterflies play in having healthy ecosystems, and how to ensure these beautiful insects thrive in our own gardens.

Accessibility Improvements Continue

Accessibility Improvement work continues at Damascus Recreational ParkKen- Gar Local ParkMeadowside Nature Center- Raptor Walkway Exhibit, and Ayrlawn Local Park. Work is scheduled to begin at Ridge Road Recreational ParkClear Spring Local Park, Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreational Park and Stratton Local Park this summer. Trail Work in Parks
 
Bikers and Runners should use caution as improvements are taking place on several trails in Montgomery Parks:
  • NEW: Work to improve Sligo Creek SVU#3 Trail at Forest Glen Road will is underway. The project will include intersection modifications, trail improvements and storm water management. The trail will remain open during project.
  • NOTICEParklawn Local Park - Trail improvements to the Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail are at Veirs Mill Road connector onto trail continue through the summer as a new connector to the trail is installed.
  • UPDATE Wheaton Regional Park - Trail work around Pine Lake to improve access and storm water management is underway.  Watch for detours posted around designated work areas through the summer.
  • Work is scheduled over the next few weeks along the Capital Crescent Trail at the DC Line. Trail users should use caution around work zones.
  • Black Hill Trail Connector Project is underway to build a new shared-use natural surface six-mile trail along the western side of Little Seneca Lake in Black Hill Regional Park. Numerous construction phases will take place over the course of the next year until the trail is complete.
  • Little Bennett Regional Park The bridge on the Beaver Valley Trail is impassible due to recent flooding. The bridge will not be accessible until repairs can be made.
