County Council Appoints Natali Fani-González to a Second Term on the Montgomery County Planning Board Montgomery Planning Board Commissioner Natali Fani-González will serve a second four-year term on the Planning Board following a unanimous vote to approve her tenure by the Montgomery County Council on Thursday, May 24, 2018. Fani-González has served on the five-member Board since 2014. Over the past several years, she has won many awards for her public service, which includes engaging residents of all backgrounds to be active participants in planning and land use decisions. "I am delighted to continue my service on the planning board," says Fani-González. "This second term will allow me to continue my work in engaging the county's communities and encouraging them to be invested in planning their future. We still have much work to do to ensure equity and environmental justice in Montgomery County and I feel honored to continue to serve the county as a Planning Board Commissioner." Planning Department Will Host Community Meeting on June 4 to Present Updates on Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan The Montgomery County Planning Department invites the public to a community meeting on Monday, June 4, 2018 to share important updates on the progress of the Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan. The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Planning Department auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring). Those planning to attend the meeting are encouraged to RSVP online. The proposed scope of the Forest Glen/Montgomery Hill Sector Plan is to reevaluate land uses, transportation strategies and redevelopment along the Georgia Avenue corridor as well as offering recommendations to improve the area's pedestrian and bicycle accessibility, connectivity and safety. The plan also looks to protect and enhance existing residential neighborhoods while balancing the region's evolving traffic demands. 2018 Parks Speaker Series Connect with community leaders, activists, planners and other individuals as part of the Montgomery Parks Speaker Series. The Speaker Series is held at the Montgomery County Planning Department Auditorium, 8787 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. Every month, topics like gardening, urban planning, naturalism, and activism will be explored and discussed with speakers from around the nation. RSVP for lunch - space is limited. Our next speaker series event will be held on June 6, at the Montgomery County Planning Auditorium. Lieutenant Nicole Adams and Sergeant Sabrina Pirtle from the Maryland-National Capital Park Police will be presenting Safety in the Parks. They will be providing insight into the Maryland-National Capital Park Police operations that patrol and protect more than 36,000 acres of land and 14 million visitors each year. Their discussion will include park safety tips and information about Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies. Laytonia Recreational Park: Grand Opening Celebration Set For June 10 Join Montgomery Parks for the grand opening of Laytonia Recreational Park. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 7300 Airpark Road in Gaithersburg. The celebration will include a ribbon cutting, family-friendly activities, food trucks and more! Please bring new and used sports equipment to donate to the local nonprofit group, Leveling The Playing Field. The equipment donated will be distributed to families in need. Eastern Box Turtles Highly Active This Season Eastern box turtles are making their way around Montgomery Parks as they enter their breeding and nesting season. This, combined with recent heavy rains, is causing an increase in movement by the turtles. Montgomery Parks is offering a few tips for people who may encounter the turtles. Park News and Community Meetings Residents are encouraged to participate in the development of the parks. Plan on attending a community meeting, visit our park projects web page or leave a comment on our Open Town Hall web page. Parks staff held a Community Meeting to discuss Columbia Local Park in Burtonsville. Parks staff sought input from the community to help determine future uses of the existing courts located on the northern section of the park. For additional information, please visit the Park Projects Page. Montgomery Parks will hold a community meeting on June 12, to present plans to improve Silver Spring Intermediate Neighborhood Park. Parks staff will present updated concept plans to improve the park. Visit the park project web page for additional information. A community meeting to present the updated plan for Carroll Knolls Local Park will be held on June 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Capital View-Homewood Local Park Activity Building, 2929 Edgewood Road in Kensington. The community is invited to come and hear the updated presentation and receive feedback on proposed park renovation concept plans. Visit the park project webpage for additional information. Join Montgomery Parks staff for a community meeting to discuss the project overview of the trail crossing of the Capital Crescent Trail at Little Falls Parkway. The meeting will be held on June 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Somerset Elementary School, All -purpose cafeteria. Staff will be presenting the project and concept alternatives for the Capital Crescent Trail crossing at Little Falls Parkway. More information. The Edith Throckmorton Neighborhood Park Renovation Project will be conducting a community meeting on Tuesday evening, June 12, from 7p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the First Baptist Church Kengar, 3922 Hampden Street. Accessibility Improvements Continue Work is underway at the Sligo-Dennis Avenue Local Park to improve accessibility. Other access improvement projects include Cabin John Regional Park, Ball Field Area, Ray's Meadow Local Park, Wheaton Regional Park-Rubini Athletic Field Complex, the Archery Range at Rock Creek Regional Park and the Archery Range at South Germantown Recreational Park.
