County Council Approves Appointment of Transportation Engineer and Planner Gerald R. Cichy to Planning Board
The Montgomery County Planning Board will have a new member, transportation engineer and planner Gerald R. Cichy, PE, AICP. On Tuesday, June 14, 2016, the County Council unanimously approved the appointment of Cichy to the Board, effective July 22. He replaces Board member Amy Presley, who is leaving after serving two consecutive terms and is ineligible for reappointment. Her last Board session will be July 21.
Like Presley, Cichy is a registered Republican. By law, the position had to be filled by a Republican, a voter who declines to affiliate with a party or by a member of another party officially recognized by the Montgomery County Board of Elections. In addition to Presley (R), current Planning Board members are Chair Casey Anderson (D), Vice Chair Marye Wells-Harley (D), Norman Dreyfuss (R) and Natali Fani-González (D). Learn more here. |
Planning Department Launches Campaign to Identify All Bike Racks in County
The Montgomery County Planning Department is launching a survey of all bicycle racks in the County as part of the ongoing Bicycle Master Plan. Planners are asking cyclists and residents to identify racks at schools, retail centers, offices, transportation hubs and other locations.
Citizens can sign up online to track bike racks in one or more areas, using an app created by BikeArlington. This data will help the County to recommend more locations for bicycle racks in Montgomery County.

Woodlawn Visitor Center Now Open
Make plans to visit and explore the county's newest historical exhibit that echoes the past and tells the story of a bustling farm, its community, and those who made a bold bid for freedom on the Underground Railroad. The Woodlawn Visitor Center, is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm through November. The trail and grounds are open year-round, sunrise to sunset. Click here for more info. |
Community Meeting to Review Southern Entrance Closure
Montgomery Parks hosted a Community Meeting to review a plan to permanently close the southern entrance to Olney Manor Recreational Park on Wednesday, June 22. The public was invited to attend the meeting to hear the current park plan and comment. The presentation and a summary will soon be available for public viewing here.

Western Grove Urban Park Scheduled to Be Closed
Western Grove Urban Park, formerly the Chevy Chase Open Space Urban Park is scheduled to be closed for renovations starting in June 2016. The 1.9 acre project, in partnership with the Chevy Chase Village, will enhance park amenities including improved accessible walkways, lighting, a paved seating area, natural play area, green space, fencing, and a water feature when completed. We're getting a face-lift!
The Meadowside Nature Center - Raptor Walkway Exhibit is being renovated to increase accessibility for all of our visitors. Work will begin in June and will remain closed until construction is completed by the end of August. The Enrichment and Lunchtime Talks for the raptors will be on hiatus until the Walkway re-opens. Road Work to Close Part of Old West Baltimore Road
Road work will be closing the section of West Old Baltimore Road, between Black Hill Regional Park entrance and Clarksburg Road on or around June 8, for approximately 6-8 weeks. Detours to enter Black Hill Regional Park will direct vehicles to enter using Frederick Road (Route 355) & W. Old Baltimore Road. Follow all state and local traffic laws at all times. The seasonal display features hundreds of live butterflies from all over the world. Carroll Ave Bridge Over Sligo Creek Parkway To Be Closed
Major rehabilitation of the MD 195 (Carroll Avenue) Bridge over Sligo Creek and Sligo Creek Parkway is underway. The bridge will be closed and traffic detoured through the duration of the one-year project. Work will intermittently close Sligo Creek Parkway daily. Kids Fishing Days This Weekend June 25 - Black Hill Boats - 8:30-10:30a
Get in on the fishing fun! We'll teach the kids how to bait a hook with worms, put their line in the water, and pull those fish in! We'll also talk about the kinds of fish that swim in this lake, what they like to eat, and the best way to catch them. Trail Work in Parks Bikers and Runners should use caution as improvements are taking place on several trails in Montgomery Parks: - Trail work, south of Wheaton Regional Park to replace a bridge connecting the Northwest Branch Trail to the Rachel Carson Greenway Trail is in progress. Trail users should exercise caution around work zone.
- NOTICE: Parklawn Local Park - Trail improvements to the Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail are scheduled to begin this winter at Veirs Mill Road connector onto trail.

Wheaton Regional Park - Pine Lake trail work will start this winter season to improve access and storm water management. Watch for detours posted around designated work areas. -
