 Interactive Map of County-Designated African American Historic Sites and Districts Launched to Honor Black History
In honor of African American heritage in Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Planning Department, in coordination with Montgomery Parks have launched a map of historically African American places included in the County's formal register of architecturally or culturally significant buildings and places. This project was initiated at the request of Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal to mark the 2016 celebration of Black History Month.
"The goal of this online resource is to raise awareness about the rich and storied past of the County's historic African American communities and buildings," says Councilmember Leventhal. "It is my hope that this tool will encourage our community to learn more about the County's African American history in an accessible, easy and interesting way. Thanks to former Councilmember Cherri Branson, who now serves as the director of the County's Office of Procurement, for proposing to create this resource and the Planning Board and Parks and Planning Departments staff for working with us to make this map a reality for our residents."  Registration Opens for Makeover Montgomery 3 Conference Scheduled for May 4 through May 6
The Montgomery County Planning Department has opened registration for its conference, Makeover Montgomery 3: Balancing Change in America's Suburbs, to be held from Wednesday, May 4 through Friday, May 6, 2016 in College Park and Silver Spring, Md.
The Makeover Montgomery 3 conference is being organized through a partnership between the Montgomery County Planning Department and the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education at the University of Maryland. The 2016 event follows similar conferences held in 2011 and 2014 by the Planning Department and University of Maryland.

 Community Invited to Attend MARC Rail Communities Design Workshops on March 7 and March 14 through March 16
The Planning Department is inviting anyone who lives, works or commutes in the Boyds and Germantown areas to attend these workshops and provide feedback about how the areas around the MARC Rail stations can be improved. Learn more here.

 Winter Speakers Series Event on March 16 Will Present New Transportation Metrics to Reduce Traffic and Increase Bicycling, Walking and Transit Trips
The Montgomery County Planning Department is hosting the last session of its Winter Speakers Series on Wednesday, March 16 at 6 p.m. in the Department's auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910). Transportation planner Jeffrey Tumlin, principal and director of strategy for San Francisco-based Nelson/Nygaard, will discuss new ways of measuring transportation performance to reduce traffic congestion and make it easier to walk, bike or take transit.
Tumlin will present alternatives to level of service (LOS), a measurement used to determine speed, travel times and other conditions, in planning transportation systems. He is currently working in Oakland, San Jose and Mountain View, California, to adopt new metrics for evaluating the impact of transportation on these communities. These new tools can help to ensure the environmental effects of traffic, such as noise, air pollution and safety concerns, are addressed so the cities can reach their goals for economic development, social equity, public health and ecological balance.  Montgomery Parks' Arbor Day Poster Contest!
Montgomery Parks is pleased to invite your 3rd-5th grade students to participate in a poster contest for a chance to host an Arbor Day Celebration at your school in April!

 Applications Due on April 1 for Montgomery County Historic Preservation Tax Credits
Owners must file an application as well as documentation of the repairs that were done with the historic preservation staff of the Planning Department by Friday, April 1, 2016. The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission will then evaluate the applications to determine whether the scope of work meets the eligibility requirements for the program. The work must have been completed no later than December 31, 2015.

 Online Feedback Map Launched for MARC Rail Communities Plan
The Montgomery County Planning Department has recently launched an online map that allows participants to convey their ideas about the future of areas around the MARC stations in Boyds and Germantown. The MARC Rail Communities Feedback Map is part of the planning work for the MARC Rail Communities Master Plan.

Parks Opens Four New Athletic Fields
The athletic fields at Northwest Branch Recreational Park will be open this spring and available to permit. There are four fields which must be permitted for use: three full size rectangles and one adult size baseball, as well as one smaller practice rectangle. Public Input Needed on Wheaton Regional Park Master Plan Update |
Park Projects: - Quince Orchard Valley Neighborhood Park: WSSC work is scheduled to begin this January as part of the WSSC Sewer Repair, Replacement and Rehabilitation Program. Work will also include the removal of the tennis court and hard surface path and allow reforestation to the area. Please use caution around work areas.

Falls Road Local Park: The parking lot entrance at Falls Road Local Park will be intermittently closed through need date as scheduled construction continues to improve traffic patterns and ADA access. Alternate parking will be limited to Falls Chapel Way during closure. Click here for more information on the park project. - Olney Family Neighborhood Park: Work is underway to improve access to hard surface trails from Treadway Road. The project is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2016.

Kemp Mill Urban Park: The park is closed for renovations to improve overall access, update the pond and expand the playground. Renovations are expected to be completed by spring 2017. Click here for more information.. - Sligo Creek Parkway: The parking lot on Sligo Creek Parkway south of Wayne Avenue is closed through the spring of 2016 for WSSC work. - Ellsworth Urban Park: Park improvements are underway to construct a new dog park in Silver Spring. Parts of the park will be inaccessible to the public as work includes improved storm water management and better access to park. Click here for more info.

 Trail Work in Parks Bikers and Runners should use caution as improvements are taking place on several trails in Montgomery Parks: -
NOTICE: Parklawn Local Park - Trail improvements to the Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail are scheduled to begin this winter at Veirs Mill Road connector onto trail. -
NEW: Wheaton Regional Park - Pine Lake trail work will start this winter season to improve access and storm water management. Watch for detours posted around designated work areas. -
Work is scheduled over the next few weeks along the Capital Crescent Trail at the DC Line. Trail users should use caution around work zones. - Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail work is underway to coordinate the removal of high risk trees and limbs including Emerald Ash Borer infested trees along the Rock Creek Hiker- Biker Trails on Beach Drive. - The pedestrian bridge at the Ten Mile Creek tributary to Little Seneca Lake in Black Hill Regional Park will be closed until spring 2016.
- Work continues on the Rock Creek trail in Rock Creek Regional Park around Baltimore Road and Norbeck Road. Trails will be partially closed for bridge work, stream work and the repaving of the trail leading to bridge. A detour will be posted when trail repaving begins.

Rock Creek Trail Signs are being installed to improve wayfinding on the trail and adjacent neighborhood trail connectors leading to main trail of the 14 mile Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail. -
