BY ANNETTE SISCO | STAFF WRITER Greetings, New Orleans food fans! This week, we venture to the suburb of Mandeville to check out the new Pat's Rest A While, perched on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. And, as a marketing fracas continues to cause legal headaches for Dong Phuong Bakery, we reflect on the ways the beloved bread shop made its real impact on our hearts, and our stomachs. Beignet Fest will return to City Park, and Brennan's reclaims a prestigious honor for its wine program. Let's get started.... 1. Relaxation station. Part bistro, part beachfront hangout, Pat's Rest A While on the Mandeville lakefront rambles through a 19th-century hotel complex that once served as a summer resort for New Orleanians seeking cool breezes and soothing views. All that's still there, along with flounder amandine, bushwackers and killer sunsets. Read Ian McNulty's report here. 2. Sweet smell of success. A legal dustup has wiped out Dong Phuong's colorful logo. But long before this standoff, Ian McNulty fell in love with the Vietnamese-American business and its fragrant loaves. Read about the "marketing" savvy that won Ian over, here. 3. Wait! There's more. In other news, the Beignet Festival announced dates for its return; Brennan's Restaurant marks a comeback for its wine program; Mimi's in the Marigny will take over a historic building in (where else?) the Faubourg Marigny; and the latest on longtime Frenchmen Street tavern 13. 4. Shake it up! Chilly confections made with the freshest local ingredients, and maybe a splash of liqueur? I'm in. Food writer Teresa B. Day welcomes the holiday weekend with recipes for vanilla bean ice cream and frozen s'more shakes — adult and kid versions. 5. Pass the dressing? If you wear your best outfit for a fancy restaurant and the guests at the next table are sporting Hawaiian shirts and ball caps, does it ruin your night? Or are you the cool customer who says clothes don't make the meal? It's another food fight on the Where NOLA Eats Facebook page. Pitch your view here. That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops. For more, visit us at NOLA.com. Have a great Fourth of July weekend, and thanks for reading! --AS Are you a NOLA.com subscriber? If you are, thanks so much. But if you’re not, we’ve got a great offer for you. Check it out! |
