What are microplastics? And why should you care about them?

When I set out to look into the growing concern about microplastic pollution from apparel, these were the first questions on my list. After all, to understand a global issue like this, you need to understand the basics. But from there, my reporting took a number of hard turns: to the Arctic Ocean, to your home washing machine, and to Patagonia, the brand that has been championed as an environmental leader.

In my feature today, “Patagonia’s Major Microplastic Problem,” I dive into the microscopic pollutant that even this heralded eco-friendly company is struggling to manage. The plastics in question are smaller than a pencil eraser, but the global impacts may shock you. - Alex Lauer

Patagonia’s Major Microplastic Problem

When you buy a fleece from Patagonia, you know you’re buying from a company that cares about the planet. But these days, customers of the brand may also get a more novel sensation: that you might actually be helping the environment by expanding your wardrobe.

In November, the New York Times Opinion section published an essay by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard in which he not only decried the proliferation of low-quality goods, but boasted about his company’s high-quality products in a very specific way: they make things, he wrote, that “cause the least amount of harm to our planet.” One big problem with that statement, as Patagonia has discovered in recent years, is a tiny pollutant that sheds from all synthetic clothing — with fleece textiles being some of the worst offenders — and is causing experts to raise the alarm: plastic microfibers, a specific type of microplastic. In recent years, microplastics have been found in the Arctic Ocean, breast milk, placentas and even human blood.

Is Patagonia misrepresenting its environmental (and human) impact? Or is this yet another case where the companies trying to do good bear the brunt of the criticism?

In yesterday's poll, we asked if you use eye cream, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that 54% of you do. Congrats on having brighter, less puffy and less wrinkly under-eyes than the other 46%.

There’s Some Great Bourbon Being Made Outside of Kentucky

It’s a common misconception that bourbon must be made in Kentucky to bear the product name. The legal requirements dictate that the spirit be aged in charred new oak barrels for at least two years with a mash bill of at least 51% corn…and produced in the United States.

While there’s no denying that Kentucky will always make up the majority of the market share (a dubious and often-cited 95%), non-Kentucky bourbon is on the rise around the country. In fact, honors like the World Whiskey Awards have non-Kentucky bourbon categories. The SIP Awards honored bourbon from Texas, Utah and Indiana with Double Golds in 2023. The bottles that stack up against Kentucky’s finest use the same processes, but retain a special terroir.

The Best Lightweight Jacket Styles for Men, According to Style Editors

The jacket never really goes away, does it? Sure, the temperate weather means packing up your puffers and down jackets in favor of a spring wardrobe, but a lightweight jacket (or two…or three, or four) that you can trust for breezy evenings and scorching dates remains a must-have. Yes, it would be nice to jump directly to tees and sandals or shorts and swolos, but the seasonal shift is wrought with unpredictable weather and sudden chills. Thus, a jacket you can trust is essential.
