Your Monday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Oct 11, 2021 | | | | | | Good evening, I don’t suppose it will be much of a surprise to anyone to hear that patients are facing a ‘postcode lottery’ over seeing a GP across England - we all know that’s the case. It is rather more shocking to see - in black and white - the worst-affected areas are served by half the number of doctors as the best. Across Lancashire it’s a mixed bag - there is one GP per 2,038 people across the country, a 5% rise since 2015. Nationally, areas with the highest numbers of inhabitants per GP includes Fylde and Wyre (2,833) while other areas of the county fare slightly better on the list. (Figures, House of Commons research) Recent analysis from the BMA shows there are over 1,800 fewer fully qualified, full-time equivalent (FTE) GPs now than there were in 2015. Between June 2020 and July 2021, the number of GP partners fell by 918. The Government says a record-breaking number of doctors started training as GPs - which the previous figures do not include. So all is perhaps not lost. But it is little comfort to those still struggling to get a GP appointment. Nicola nicola.adam@jpimedia.co.uk | |
